Legendary English folk singer Ralph McTell wrote this song for the Irish band The Fureys, a ballad about the tough times in Ireland when families were separated because of emigration.

I will never forget the walk to the station
Me with your suitcase being brotherly strong,
Trying to make light of the whole situation
In light conversation we move through the throng

Above all the roar of the town was the blue sky
I could hear  the birds singing for the joy of the day,
There was no support from the city forthcoming
No sympathy knowing you are going away,
So hard to say goodbye.

And there was you with bright eyes, best dress now for travelling
Me in my work clothes, unshaven so plain
Oh I fully intended to put in a half day,
But my good intentions went with you on the train.

So I never looked back as the train left the station
Crossed over the road and walked into the park,
And there in a bar some old man there was singing
And I sat there drinking until it got dark.

And outside the trees they grew starlings like apples
Their hustle and chatter not dampened by the rain,
But washed down the pavements and into the gutters
And soaked through my clothes as I set out again,
So hard to say goodbye.

And above me the stars were all hidden by the rain clouds
The song of the old man still locked in my brain,
All emigration, the curse of any nation
The setting now fitting his sad sweet refrain,
So hard to say goodbye....

This is an original song by Linda Birmingham which she entered for The Watford Folk Club Songwriting Contest in 2016. Linda was a finalist in the competition!

Brian Reader, the subject of the song, was the mastermind behind a huge jewellery raid in London's diamond district (Hatton Garden)over the Easter weekend in 2015.
