Andy Carvin, social media strategist at National Public Radio (NPR), was part of a panel discussion on authoritarianism and social media at "Reporting on International Security and Terrorism" in Istanbul. 

The seminar looks critically at the role of the media and how journalists can avoid being exploited by terrorists to help them achieve their goals. Discussions are hosted by international security experts and attended by 25 journalists from around the world.

Careless social media use can endanger journalists' sources - NPR's Andy Carvin

Rachel Gerber, a program officer at the Stanley Foundation where she is responsible for human protection programming, spoke at the 2012 Reporting on International Security and Terrorism Seminar in Istanbul.

The three-day seminar examines the role of the news media and how journalists can avoid being exploited.
 
The Stanley Foundation engages U.N. officials, diplomats, and policymakers to support the implementation of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) as a preventive framework. 

Genocide and mass atrocities can be prevented by promoting the acceptance of states' sovereign responsibilities to ensure basic human protection, according to the Stanley Foundation. 

The world must help countries meet those responsibilities and ensure an effective multilateral response when states prove unwilling to honor them, a preventive framework outlined by the United Nations' Responsibility to Protect, the foundation says.

Discussions are hosted by international security experts and attended by 25 journalists from around the world.

I work as a writer and editor for the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and as communications coordinator for the Food, Land Use and Restoration program (FOLUR). I was formerly the communities editor for the  Thomson Reuters Foundation AlertNet and TrustLaw news websites. In this London-based role, I reported, wrote, edited, blogged, made videos, took pictures and planned online editorial content. My move to the foundation came in August 2010, after two years with the Reuters UK website in London where I blogged, made videos, recruited guest commentaries, coordinated real-time web coverage of budgets, Bank of England events, the 2010 UK general election and International Women's Day. Before joining Reuters Toronto in 2005 as an online editor, I worked at various news publications in Canada. I earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in cinema studies from Innis College in the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University.
