'Lifetime of Love' is the debut album by Moon Diagrams, the solo recording project of Deerhunter co-founder and drummer Moses John Archuleta. Recorded in Georgia (Atlanta and Athens) and Manhattan (East Village) over a 10-year period, 'Lifetime of Love' finds Archuleta processing various stages of love, loss, and regeneration via forlorn outsider pop, minimal techno, and warm, weightless experimentation.
 
Archuleta follows sudden fits of inspiration or moments of chance, letting the unknown happen naturally while still confining himself to a specific set of boundaries. Samples were often taken from thrift store-sourced LPs, removed from their sleeves and chosen at random to find loops and textures. Elsewhere, Archuleta would anonymize digital songs and sound files, erasing track names, and re-recording new versions of the randomized mixes.

'Lifetime of Love' is the result of three extended fugue states, each marked by specific moments of catharsis. In 2007, between the release of Deerhunter’s breakout LP Cryptograms and 2008 LP Microcastle, Archuleta began his earliest solo experiments. The nascent exploration was enough to free himself and create sounds without inhibition. “Bodymaker” and “Nightmoves” are products of Archuleta’s earliest solo recordings, capturing his willingness to venture outside of the taut, mesmerizing drone rock of his main band. The chilling, ambient techno of “Nightmoves” perfectly foils and compliments the broodingly sullen but sincerely beautiful shuffle into the dark.
 
Between 2012 and 2015, Archuleta experienced a reset of sorts, including the collapse of his marriage (a 10-year long relationship), touring support for Ariel Pink and James Ferraro, and a rekindled interest in his solo material. He began actively cutting himself off from a number of personal relationships and experimented with various drugs to begin recording again. Locking himself in his practice space, Archuleta would use only the spare instruments he found laying around in recording sessions. This period yielded a disparate mix of sonic sketches, from eerily bucolic choir recordings (“Playground”), dusty art-pop (“Moon Diagrams”), and infectiously jubilant dance pop (“End of Heartache”).
 
For the final period, Archuleta found inspiration following an extended stint in Berlin, when he had flown out of the US on Christmas day, largely estranging himself from his friends and family. While holed up in the Michelberger Hotel, Archuleta fully intended to finish his debut LP. Instead, he remained in a state of relative isolation, haunting the hotel and taking in the city’s dark energy. After three weeks, Archuleta returned home in Atlanta, without having made much headway on the album. Feeling unproductive, depressed, and marred by jetlag, Archuleta resolved to finish the LP, working in a three-day fury of productivity that resulted in “Blue Ring,” “Ghost and the Host,” “Magic Killer,” and the final edits of 'Lifetime of Love.'
 
Subtly grandiose and quietly epic, the album explores a hopeful and curious beginning, a morose middle, and a bittersweet, optimistic end.

Moon Diagrams - End Of Heartache

Born, raised and based in Los Angeles and of Chilean descent, Gaby Hernandez has been writing and recording since 2001.

A founding member of the ‘creative music ensemble’ Build An Ark alongside others including Carlos Niño, Dexter Story and Dwight Trible, she has lent her vocal talents to both Teebs' debut Brainfeeder release Ardour and Dimlite's Outernational Duet.

Her third record Spirit Reflection, released in June on Mr Bongo, features a stellar line-up of LA talent; jazz star Kamasi Washington, Lapalux, Kelis and Gaslamp Killer collaborator Dexter Story, plus Ninja Tune, Plug Research and Soul Jazz artist Carlos Niño, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker.

Latin, folk, electronica and jazz blend seamlessly on Spirit Reflection and we have the pleasure of premiering one of the record's tracks, Lo Mas Dulche.

Blissful layers of instrumentation, vocal harmonies and folkloric percussion intertwine with west coast feel to create a unique, beautiful and multi-layered sound.

The Cactus Channel’s new single “Leech” takes the orchestrated soul futurism that has become their signature sound and adds silvery vocal dimensions, as the band’s own Lewis Coleman steps up to the mic. The song’s emotionally potent lyrics evoke the wrestling that arises internally with the feelings that linger after a breakup. As Lewis elucidates, “Leech” is about “those feelings that don’t go away, and pop up at unexpected times. When something shifts inside, but even your best friends wouldn’t know; your mood is instantly altered, even if you can walk back into the room and nobody notices it externally.” The band has recently shared the video for their first single “Storefront” and announced a huge national tour and an October residency at Melbourne’s The Night Cat.

Following MITÚ’s release of the most recent Siempre EP (2015) and their two previous LPs, the hit record Balnear (2014) and debut Potro (2012), the Colombian jungle techno duo are gearing up for the release of their new album, Cosmus. In a break with the group’s tendency to record albums in relatively short time frames, the album was recorded over a longer period, giving greater importance to the sound recording of ideas at the time of their conception and less importance to post-production. 

This time around, MITÚ took the time to let the record mature in the studio and get the ideas to come together, making an album in which the sound is far removed from that of their previous records, almost totally electronic and minimizing the acoustic parts, conceived with the intention of being performed live in its entirety.

The 3rd single, Coctel dropped on August 11th.

At Cosmic Compositions, we’ve long felt there was a similarity between the avant-garde/free jazz scene of the 50s/60s and the modern beat generation. Both movements aimed to deconstruct, expand and rewire the conventions of their genres of origin, and were never afraid to experiment or work outside the commercial framework of the time. With our Avant Garde Series, we connected the dots between the two, paying homage to Empire State Musicians like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Sun-Ra along the way. 

In more recent years, we’ve sensed kindred spirit between jazz-infected beat music, and the new generation of lo-fi funk, psychedelia, noise, and folk musicians operating around the globe. While we’ve been feeling our way towards this liminal zone with projects from the likes of Mr. Armish, Affsid Kidjhagiffy, Aporia, and our Way Out compilation, jitwam’s new album ज़ितम सिहँ might be the most beautiful expression of it we’ve released yet. 

Born in Assam, Gauhati, in Northeast India, but currently based in New York’s storied borough of Brooklyn, jitwam spent his formative years in New Zealand and Australia, before living in monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and washed out apartments in London. Of everywhere and nowhere, his music draws influence from a litany of iconoclasts including, but not limited to RD Burman, Moondog, The Velvet Underground, Yayoi Kusama, Jay Electronica, Jay Dilla, Moodymann, Leon Thomas, Madlib and Asha Bhosle. 

Across the album he utilises knowledge acquired through years spent digging through dusty crates, and talents honed as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist. A series of stumbling, jazz/soul-rooted beat sculptures, each buried beneath a haze of fuzzy psychedelia, broken microphone blues, and articulated through a freestyled process he describes as “first thought, best thought”, ज़ितम सिहँ solidifies jitwam's spot as a major emerging talent. 

Recalling the fourth world dreamscapes explored by oddball songwriters like Connan Mockasin, Clarence Clarity, Jai Paul, Silicon, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, it represents a time of transition and remembrance for jitwam, while still fulfilling the core qualities he looks for in song. In his words, “Music is a refuge. A shelter from the storm. A place you can go to close your eyes.” 

Since he first shared his music with IZWID Records boss Kutmah at a Brainfeeder afterparty in London, jitwam has released through Leaving Records, Cosmic Compositions, and The Jazz Diaries (the label he co-runs with Casey Van Reyk and Nigel Mphisa). He’s also written with Inkswel (BBE) and Paul White (R&S), featured on Moodymann’s K7! DJ Kicks compilation and been championed by Gilles Peterson, Alexander Nut, Andrew Jervis (Bandcamp), and Funkineven. Mixed and mastered by Matthew David at Stones Throw studios in Los Angeles, ज़ितम सिहँ will be available on vinyl and digital formats through Cosmic Compositions / hhv.de.

Melbourne's Cy Gorman returns to Heard and Felt with an EP of Afro Asian beats plus an Ennio Styles edit and an odd ballad. Check out Cy on the ukelele, 808, acoustic piano, samples, vocals and production, but there are plenty of collaborations on here too.

Cy's music, including remixes for Los Charly's Orchestra and recently San Lazaro (Hope Street Recordings), has earned him praise and plays from Mixmag, Gilles Peterson, Jazzy Jeff, KCRW, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Richard Kingsmill (Triple J), Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts), Lance Ferguson, Toshio Matsuura, Jay Scarlett and Andrew Jervis.

Narrowing down the group's style into a genre is almost impossible, as they bond over the desire to push musical boundaries. No strangers to the Melbourne band scene, the four old friends have been drawing crowds through an epic journey at intimate venues and festivals for the best part of the past 4 years. Developing a tight live show bolstered by wild improvisation, the group have left punters itching for their first full length studio album that mines jazz, psych and disco for its irresistible groove.

"The Magnificent Moon" a 9 minute psychedelic disco journey is the opening track taken from Mildlife’s debut LP "Phase" due for release early 2018. Capturing the spirit of the band, this kaleidoscope jam is the interplanetary path between jazz, funk and disco with the perfect amalgamation of cosmic electronics and soulful acoustic instrumentation. 

Tom Shanahan explains its entrancing grip, “The Magnificent Moon feels like the veteran journeyman to the rest of the album. I’m not sure if that’s because it was written first or because it seems to know what it wants and has a more considered direction. It never really second guesses itself except for maybe just before the outro when he realises he may have journeyed too far and his space suit has a hole in it. But then he just jams some gum in the hole and gets on with it anyway.”
