Safe Space

A synchronistic experience may occur when two or more events that share similar content but are not related by a perceptible cause, are connected by observance. For the observer, this unexpected connection is personally significant and profoundly notable.

"Synchronicity" is comprised of three phrases played by eight different electronic instruments and was created by methodically placed patterns of layered phrases. In this description, I’ll refer to the three phrases as: A (the first phrase), B (the second phase, the first phrase in retrograde), and C (the last phrase).

Each instrument is recorded into nine tracks and in each track the instrument plays once through one, two, or three of the phrases (specifically five tracks play all three phrases, two tracks play phrases A and B or B and C, and two tracks only play phrase A or C). In the nine layered tracks, the recorded phrases are arranged so the texture exponentially thickens then thins. The only elements that line up are a few of the first and/or last notes of some phrases. This forms what I’ll refer to as the “pattern”.

To do the same on a larger scale, I duplicated the pattern seven times to be layered and played by the various instruments. Similar to the structure within the pattern, I positioned the patterns in such a way that when a new instrument enters, a few of their first phrases line up with some phrases at the end of the pattern being played by another instrument.

The layered patterns rapidly build to where the various phrases occur almost directly on top of one another. Simultaneously, the increase in frequency modulation becomes so extreme the phrases are nearly unrecognizable. Though very warped and abstract, you can still discern the fundamental pitches. As the sound dissipates, you hear the last instrument finishing its pattern, bringing everything together in a single synchronistic voice.

I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your un-dumb letters, would never write so elementary phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it would lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is just really a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any the more by giving myself away like this—But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defences. And I don’t really resent it …

Please forgive me for writing such a miserable letter.
