MOrphism has been performed, in various forms, in Saint-Denis (J.-M. Lopez Lopez composition workshop), Paris (Institut Cervantès), and Graz (impuls Festival 2011.
New performances by Ensemble Interface are coming in January 2013 in Berlin, Baden-Baden and Paris.

Piece for small ensemble, second version of my first piece, MOrphism 0.8.3b.  
It was selected after a call for scores by Ensemble Interface and impuls academy (2011 edition) of Graz. The piece was performed on 13th February 2011, along with pieces by Beat Furrer, Rebecca Saunders, Mariana Ungureanu and Daniel Vezza.

For this project, falling somewhere between composition and improvisation, the score is entirely generated by computer during the performance, from a set of predetermined rules. As the flutist, Taiga Ultan, tries to keep up and make sense of the torrent of ever-changing musical information she is bombarded with on the screen, maybe there’s still hope for some freedom to emerge…? The first brick of a larger cycle for multiple instruments, electronics and live-generated score, where the audience will ultimately take control, influence the music performed on stage and interact collectively with the whole concert apparatus.
This project was conceived during the 21st Century Flute workshop given by Claire Chase with Chris Swithinbank in Harvard in the fall 2018.

This piece is intended as an homage to the use of electricity and electronicity in music in general, and a contradictory study on the concepts of saturation and distortion in music. 
It takes its source, as a metaphor, with the “animal-spirits” image. This is an ancient medical and philosophical concept used to explain, in a “naive” way, the nervous system behaviour and the electric currents passing through it, necessary (but not sufficient) basis for the emergence of spirit. 
The image of an inert animal which, under the control of the current, is taken by violent convulsions and seems to come back to life, was used as an impulse for the piece itself and its development. The myth of Frankenstein and his creature is not so far… Those who, beyond the cinematic cliché, have read the original work of Mary Shelley, know that the initial shock of electrical energy, though it leads the creature to exaltation and savagery, also invites it ultimately to meditation and relief.  
The piece aims to recall such a torrent of primordial energy, and its various forms of “resonance”. The electronic part is mainly built upon “electric” sound materials and audio artefacts, in a broader way, as well as real-time transformations of the instruments, referring to the characteristic distorded sound of rock, electronic or noise music. The computer allows here a new way of writing the distortion, as a process, interpolating slowly between different pre-defined sound "colors".  The computer also served to formalize the writing process of the score itself, through different techniques : chord spectralization, morphological analysis and musical transposition of non-musical materials, morphing, constraint-based systems,...

Julien VINCENOT (1985 - France) is a composer, performer and musician-researcher, currently based in China. He holds a PhD in composition from Harvard University, under the guidance of Chaya Czernowin and Hans Tutschku. In 2022-2023, he was visiting scholar at Shanghai Conservatory. Co-founder of the Unmapped collective.
