Up next on Soul Clap Records, the label that brought you the funk and all that stomping to move your trunk, we're smoothing it out with something truly deep. Presenting the break out debut of talented young David Marston. His roots reach back to his city of birth, Chicago, then spread to the island of Jamaica, where he grew up fascinated with the new world of sound around him. Early guitar training and eclectic musical influences exposed him to classic rock, the blues, jazz, reggae and dub; inexorably the emotive power of music took its hold on him. Now he represents the city of Philadelphia and strives to make music that combines varied, contrasting, and diverse musical elements in a manner that is both intricate and elegant. 

We originally took notice of David a couple years back when he sent us "Gruv", a deep saxophone driven bomb that became the A side of the Jamaicalia EP. Then it took over a year for him to feel ready with his next body of music, which included the future Deep 4 Life anthem "I Don't Want", "My Love Will Be Crying" and "Trust Me". For this EP we also have the world premier of Gemini Love aka Crew Love's three headed and two faced monster, Eli Goldstein, Gadi Mizrahi and Nick Monaco, who have gotten together to present a punky, funky remix of "I Don't Want". 

About his EP, titled Jamaicalia, in David's words: 
"Jamaicalia is a marriage of Jamaica and Tropicalia. I first encountered the term Tropicalia as the caption of a photograph taken in Jamaica. Intrigued, I discovered that Tropicalia was an avant-garde art movement that was started in the 1960s in Brazil. The movement came to exemplify cultural hybridity. It encouraged cultural syncretism: the merging of various and divergent artistic influences with the purpose of creating something novel and powerful. I am fascinated by Brazilian music, and the songs that are featured on this EP undoubtedly have strong Brazilian influences. My music, to a great extent, is the result of fusion; it is a creolized music, a pastiche of diverse styles. While my music is not typically Jamaican, Jamaican culture has had a significant influence on my approach to music creation. For me, Jamaicalia is an apt title for this body of music, because it embodies an experimental amalgam of world and dance musical elements."

A place far away from everything, yet right around the corner. A vision close enough to touch, yet so far away. Surrounded by keys, hatches, pots and small fragmented parts, Marbert Rocel lie down, discuss and dance through the winter of 2015. In this environment, in their studio in Leipzig, the band ties together the songs, which first saw the light of day in a small spot enclosed by woods in the summer of 2014.  Each decision goes through every head, each chord is listened to a hundred times, from font to back and in reverse, each compromise: a triumph for the common cause. Not pompoous string arrangements fuel this album with grandeur, but rather the notion of a consensual nod, which has evolved within Marbert Rocel over the years.  “In the Beginning” is the fourth album by Marbert Rocel, a living utopia and a tart kiss for every purist genre lover. Nothing is hewn raw on here, rather sculptured delicately. Percussion is tickling from synth pads like dew, and the songs welcome you like good friends. Like Tinkerbell, Spunks voice guides through this strange familiar world, moving past big feelings and small gestures, to finally lead to where it all started: “In The Beginning”.

It’s sometimes good to keepadmirers at a distance. For her “come-back” album, Brisa Roché followsthis rule to the letter.Afterfour albums in France, she returned to her native California—not the one with six-lane highwaysand palm trees, but the one up north, where mountain lions roam,and sequoias tower. There, hiddenin her home-studio, she channeled song after song, inspired by tracks arrivingfrom producersall over the world. Some sent sound hoping to re-provoke songwriting in the vein of jazz-singer-Brisa freshly arrived in France the moment the Twin Towers fell, who haunted the stages of Parisian caves with ahigh shadowy voice, forcing journalists to compare her to Billie Holiday. Others sent what revealed a preferencefor theavant-gardismof “Mystery Man” off ofher first record on Blue Note, that transported fans withpop as daring as it was sweet. The album INVISIBLE 1 istitled such because anythingis possible when limitations imposed by astudio setting are discarded, when judgments and timidity are veiled by distance, when collaborations multiply across the waves, when intimacy with strangers makes art. Brisawrites quickly, urgent with the noveltyof imported sounds and privacy, 40 melodic arrangements, 40 stories told, narrowed down now to a 14-song album with two sides, upon which two sides of her personality dance.The “introvert side” nestles on Thibaut Barbillon’s intimate guitars and soaring chords, the singer a dreamer and an insomniac, giving herself up in confession. As if escaped from a girl group, she invites us to walk with her, or to lock ourselves in her room withher.The “extrovert side”, sunnier with a more electronic feel and Blackjoy at the control panel, features ideas from co-producer Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague, Yasmine Hamdan, Elodie Frégé...), upon which Brisa’s voice is amplified, playful as a Kate Bush, serious as a Lana Del Rey.This production, free from all constraints, between continents, out of French studios, American studios, home-studios, underground studios,from Paris to the American West, gives us a new Brisa Roché.
