Heaven (Laberge Edit)

Saline is the third installment in a series of records from Ultramajic boss Jimmy Edgar. While the first part, Hot Inside, represented the element of fire, and its follow-up release, Mercurio, symbolized water, Saline is aligned with earth. It's no accident that the name refers specifically to the earthly compound salt, as desalination is an integral metaphysical process that helps to hone the third eye.

The EP rises from the ashes of Hot Inside and Mercurio with "Burn," a blazing acid-tinged banger that boats dry drums and a strangled wail. The reference to fire in the title suggests the evolution of Edgar's series of singles, while the name of the track "Decalcify" invokes a process closely related to desalination, as both play a role in making the body more attuned to supernatural experiences. Ultramajic's Chicago house influence enticed legendary footwork producer DJ Rashad, who's voice can be heard in the sampled squawk on metallic tune "Walk Show." The final track "Who's Watchin," features Jimmy's own vocal, coy bleep-bloop instrumentation and hissing hi-hats. Taken as a whole, Saline and the other releases in Jimmy's series of dance singles are designed to instigate the processes they allude to and aid in the path of spiritual development.

Having been a longstanding fan of Grauzone and Stephan Eicher's early solo work, Headman/ Robi Insinna was originaly asked to remix a track a few years back.
The idea of doing a Reworks 12“ on Relish came later and the choice fell on „Nice". Which will also be part of  the Reworks album coming next year.

Headman then enlisted the help of New York City’s Justin Strauss who played  "Eisbaer" by Grauzone when he got his first copy after he just started his first DJ job at legendary Mudd Club, who set to add his touch to "Le Files du Limmatquai" along with his partner Bryan Mette under the  (Whatever/Whatever Remix) Moniker.

The Cover of the release is a take on the original artwork from the “Nice“ 12“ US mixes Vinyl from 83', which is by Klaudia Schifferle from Swiss all girl punk band Kleenex, who had written and performed „Nice" originally.

The result is a classic sound with a smooth modern edge.

This may not be to everyone's liking, especially if you have been tuning consistently to my IN 30 mixes, which primarily focuses on the varying shades of hip-hop, funk and experimental beats. House and Techno have always been a staple in my record collection, particularly with NY and Chicago house music being an indelible part of my journey.

'Lights Out' is an extension of the DTW spirit essentially, and it showcases some of the cuts that are on constant rotation in my sets. After all, there really isn't a need to categorise music. It's all about a feeling.

The release last autumn of Reel People’s first full studio album in 10 years was, it’s fair to say, a moment. Retroflection stylishly recreated soul, disco and boogie classics behind the collective’s formation nearly 20 years ago and exposed its rarefied DNA like never before. Now band leader Oli Lazarus widens the collective, inviting the world’s finest producers and remixers to add their funky splices to the Retroflection blueprint. Retroflection Remixed, featuring Mousse T., Osunlade, DJ Spinna, John Morales, Atjazz, Terry Hunter, Sebb Junior, Scott Diaz, Da Brownie, Tall Black Guy, Matt Cooper’s OUTSIDE, BusCrates and Art Of Tones, is a majestic rebooting of the soulful flow that swept us away in 2018.
	
Art Of Tones get’s his sparkly mitts on Don’t Stop The Music, swaggering synth ‘n’ bass riffs further underlining Angie Stone’s classy strut through Yarbrough & People’s 1980 hit, whilst Buscrates – true to the name of his remix – pumps irresistible funk bounce into I’m In Love, a truly lowdown re-skinning of Reel People’s Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King tribute where Navasha Daya’s vocal sounds sassier than ever.

Osunlade eases us in with an elegant re-interpretation of Reel People’s Pleasure cover Joyous, deep throbs of electronica and rippling percussion carrying loops of the vocal and that iconic sax solo to stunning new heights – or depths. Similarly, Atjazz dims the lights and intensifies the mood for his take on Twilight. Where Reel People played impressively close to Maze’s original, Atjazz treads to shuffling jazz drums, double-bass and piano. The build of parts is spine-tingling stuff. Matt Cooper and his outstanding OUTSIDE project also take on the mantle of Joyous, and serve us a full fat disco jazz funk odyssey.

There are a number of uptempo treats too. Take Sebb Junior’s snappy piano-house routine for the Mica Paris-fronted I Want To Thank You – a sparkling turbo-charge to Alicia Myers’ early Eighties gospel-R&B vibe – or NYC mix legend John Morales’ ecstatic nine-minute mirrorball twirl of Geraldine Hunt-anthem Can’t Fake The Feeling complete with epic drum and vocal (Daya once again) breakdowns. Respected UK house DJ-producer Scott Diaz gives the Sharlene Hector-led cover of Side Effect’s Always There greater guitar-licked urgency but without compromise to the song’s soulful poise and power, and revered Chicago veteran Terry Hunter is a match made in heaven for Tony Momrelle, who soars through the former’s soulfully-charged remix of Buttercup (Carl Anderson’s mid-Eighties, Stevie Wonder-penned gem) with all of its funky drums, b-line twists and warm musical arrangements. German maestro Mousse T. hands us a nostalgic rework of Teena Marie’s I Need Your Lovin’  featuring the female powerhouses Vulu Malinga, LaDonna Harley-Peters and Sharlene Hector.

Elsewhere, South African talent Da Brownie dresses Reel People’s peppy, Omar-fronted update of Skipworth & Turner treasure Thinking About Your Love in sharp, finely-detailed deep dance threads, and Detroit star Tall Black Guy (TBG) sprinkles considerable amounts of summer samba magic over Momrelle’s other Retroflection outing Can We Pretend - a stunning re-awakening of the Bill Withers and Jose Feliciano collabo for the second time in mere months. There’s room yet for DJ Spinna to expand the reaches of Keep It Up (Anthony David’s luscious rendition of Milton Wright’s deep-soul bomb) with another of his transcendental space-funk remixes. Mind-blowing.

‘Norwegian cuisine is very characteristic. Traditionally a Norwegian dish does not contain much spices, so the taste of the food is very much straight from nature. Some Norwegian food could be considered a bit hardcore for some, but also enviromentally friendly, as it is built on old traditions of using the resources in your immediate surroundings…’

That’s Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, Norway’s finest disher-up of cosmic techno, who’s whipped up a pumping new album with tracks titled like a tasting menu of his homeland’s underrated cuisine, from soup to nuts. Well, not quite: it’s more like ‘Raakost’ (raw vegetables) to ‘Vafler’ (waffles) – with lashings of ‘Lammelaar’ (dried salted lamb meat), ‘Vossakorv’ (‘a sheep-sausage made in Voss’), and ‘Eggedosis’ (‘what you get when you mix eggs and sugar with a blender. Kids love it… At least, I did when I was younger!’). Yum!

Smalhans was recorded immediately after Lindstrøm’s last, more experimental album Six Cups Of Rebel in July 2011, and its unashamedly 4/4 techno rhythms and bubbling, nutritious analogue synth sounds – mixed by friend and collaborator Todd Terje – are set to inject a vitamin kick to dancefloors everywhere. Lindstrøm’s gorgeous arpeggiations and chord changes can sound mathematical at times (check the clockwork mechanism of ‘Faarikal’), but it’s all born of his intuitive approach to his gear.

‘The process is definitely intuitive. I try all sorts of combination of chords and changes, and just know when something interesting happens. I find myself getting lost in the details. Weighing the ingredients, trying to find the right balance. A little more of this, a little less of that. Making the same dish over and over again, hoping it gets even better. Trying out new recipes and ingredients. Eating it up, and starting again the next day. Just like spending time in the studio…’

Lindstrøm spends a lot of time in that studio, preferring a normal working day and quiet nights at home with his family. In the distant past he has been a folk/country keyboardist, but bought his first sampler around 1999 after moving from his birthplace, Stavanger, to Oslo. With that real-instrument background, he still considers himself an outsider in the hi-tech world of contemporary dance music, but that perspective allows him greater freedom. He has collaborated with Prins Thomas and Christabelle, and remixed LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Franz Ferdinand, Glasser, Best Coast and many more. As a solo artist Lindstrøm has released three albums, It´s A Feedelity Affair in 2006, Where You Go I Go Too in 2008 and Six Cups Of Rebel in 2012, and he’s a several-times winner of the Norwegian Grammy awards.

If today’s minimal dance music is leaving you feeling a bit starved, Smalhans’s full-fat analogue sound will fill you up and keep you glowing. ‘Electronic music is moving in so many directions,’ says Lindstrøm, ‘it’s hard to keep track of all the various twists and turns. Trends come and disappear, new subgenres of subgenres erupt and fade away faster then ever. But the beat lives on, it just comes in new colours and shapes.’

First collaborating on acid-tinged deep house cut ‘Talk To Me’ which featured on Jerome Sydenham’s recent album ‘Cosmic Urban Flight’, Fatima and Jerome team up for fiery long player ‘Brooklyn Zoo’.

Jerome first stumbled upon artist Fatima Njai during one her many powerful street performances in Berlin. He was mesmerised, so much so that the show made an indelible impression and he was moved to reach out to her. Upon meeting, the pair established a musically fruitful connection right away.

After their studio sessions, the pair would often venture out to sample Berlin’s House music scene, both noticing something of a void in terms of musicality. Inspired to fill this gap, Jerome and Fatima immediately began leaning toward strings, percussion, pianos and synths: sounds that represent the essence of House.

The outcome is ‘Brooklyn Zoo’, an album Jerome describes as “an emotional variance of Deep House, with universal street adaptability and a club friendly arrogance.” Staying true to the spirit of House music, the album is at once raw and intimate, soulful and gritty, joyful and intense.

And the title? As Jerome says: “Berlin and Brooklyn have great confluence of underground energies. It is also a reminder of the change of sound style and vibes that have occurred over the years. Exchanging and reflecting on the different and similar experiences. Making the connection between culture, music and the perspectives on the exploitation, progression, presentation and growth of such vibes all lead to the title: BROOKLYN ZOO. This is ultimately an international cultural reference mirroring and uniting the reality of rhythm, fun and love.”
