Jung An Tagen - "1:53 into the Future"

In the movie “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future” a cable network has created a new form of very short, subliminal advertisements called "Blipverts". This new technology has only one flaw: when lazy and fat people watch them they explode. Having a bit of a mix-fatigue, I found by compressing time I can concentrate actually better on specific sounds. Disclaimer: don't be lazy.

Frequency response test: a harsh, buzzing sound, followed by the outbreak of structured chaos, controlled disorder, the decline of patterns, accelerating, slightly varying, sounding my skull, activating the membranes of my ears. “Emergent Properties” investigates the neuroscientific qualities of synthetic sound with musical means. The form chosen: deconstructed, fractured, mathematically inspired. Offering an acoustic tour-de-force, an overstimulated exploration of perceptive processes, Jung An Tagen has chosen a radical experiential approach. He concentrates on the sensible qualities of sound, testing strategies of physical disorientation and forceful sonic phenomena. While the focus lies on the material itself, on elementary grains and their frequencies, durations and intensities, he shifts into the realms of hyper-aesthetics. Singular sine waves and pointed signals, sound points, are being modulated, accumulated to swarm systems, falling apart again, measuring space. I can sense ecstatic, elastic motions inscribed into these abstract, pure sounds. They fall, escalate, stretch, jump and tumble, are organized in periodical rhythms of differing duration, performing glissandi of pitches, micro-movements or gathering in stochastic, scattered clouds of noise. I’m following figures and shapes, sound characters dancing into chaos, dissolving into flux. Sonic entities are disappearing and reappearing again. They group themselves into sequences of stimuli and form interlocked motives and patterns, folding in and out. “Emergent Properties” enters a state where the level of immanence fights the level of virtuality, laying bare an interspace of potentiality. What’s the consciousness of synthetic sound? Sketching out an autopoietic, self-organizing system, reigned over by densities and intensities, Jung An Tagen is offering a possible perspective.
