Gost Zvuk prepare for a busy 2023 with an enthralling double LP's worth of futurist sound design from Flaty. In the game for more than a decade now, the producer, mastering engineer and all-round visionary artist has delivered an impressive range of music across both his own ANWO imprint as well as for West Mineral ltd., 12th Isle, Firecracker and more.

Always content to subvert expectations and blur stylistic lines, on Intuitive Word there is a clear fascination with a spectral, whittled-down-to-its-core type of avant-pop/RNB hybrid. Digital strings, dubbed beyond recognition semantic snatches, re-imagined new age style synthesis and even flourishes of MMORPG computer game soundtracks all combine into something that feels uniquely Flaty. In a sense, Intuitive Word marries ambient sound collage and hyperreal, narrative-style vocal processing. However, glimmers of shoegaze and old 'ethereal' bands (think Harold Budd & Cocteau Twins) crop up on tracks like 'Tree' and 'Nepal Lit', a testament to Flaty's skill for world-building and atmospherics.

Across the 19 cuts there is a recurring theme of choral style, computer generated elegies. A kind of 'cristal trance', in their words. 'Mint' combines these with overtly RNB style vocal samples, whereas darker, more broken beat soundscapes can be heard on the Madteo collab 'Observer'. With plenty of sombre and cinematic style ventures such as 'NEWS' breaking up the album and eschewing this focus on vocals, we find one of the most consistent producers in the current Russian scene delivering what may well be his most accomplished collection yet.

When a Plans Come Together

The artist’s menial employment at a nightclub is explored in his third solo release, Coatcheck. In it, Zeisig carves a series of surreal apertures for viewing the club’s framework of workplace behavior and patron expectation. These viewpoints are so immersed and encoded in the physical and economic structures of the club that they sound far removed, or completely distinct—marking the realities of wage laborers who enable the necessary but still fantastical “escape” from capitalist drudgery.

The record presents different atmospheres and acoustics of the club—a place where people go to escape their working lives and release their inhibitions—from the perspective of a person working there. Functioning as a conceptual map of the space, each track on the album follows a different location of the building, activity, and mood of the worker. Instead of thundering beats and whirling debauchery, the artist yields the sounds of structures hidden from view but necessary to the production of public space.

The album is a meditation on the contradiction inherent in supposedly free and progressive spaces, which are in many ways the same as any capitalist institution in terms of what’s experienced by their menial workers and marginalized attendees. In an attempt to provide an auditory and psychic balm to the listener in recognition of this fact, Zeisig draws upon his extensive research and practice of ASMR phenomena during the recording process. A cultural sonic development that is located most often in the privacy of one’s home and head, such techniques are explored as a means of challenging the rules and arrangements that guide the club.  

All proceeds go to Women In Exile, a Berlin-based organization dedicated to helping women and families seeking refugee status and resettlement in Germany.
 
Florian T M Zeisig holds a master’s degree in sound arts from Universität der Künste Berlinand, and is a current excellence student of Prof. Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto). His solo and collaborative work as half of the duo OCA has been released by labels such as Important Records/Cassauna, Anòmia, Constellation Tatsu and Métron Records. Recent collaborations include a feature on Kelela’s Aquaphoria mixtape and a remix for Loraine James. He has presented installation and performance work at institutions such as Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Cafe OTO, and Hangar Barcelona, amongst others.

Hailing from Moscow and St. Petersburg respectively, Sergey Podluzhniy, Piper Spray and Lena Tzibizova come together as AIR Krew and share with us “Discuss and Come Back.” While floating broadly in Shoegaze’s orbit, the album charts a pretty unpredictable course from beginning to end, with an ornate sentimentality running as a constant from track to track. As in most cases, the words don’t do justice to the sound, the map really isn’t the terrain and you’re better off  taking the time to explore it all for yourself.

Akhira Sano's  Penetrating, For Filtration was manufactured on C60 Super Ferro tape for a low noise floor, high output, and an incredible warm sound. Packaged in a purple tinted case with silver shimmer printing. 

Japan's Akhira Sano is a young master of slow, ambient, electro new age music. His compositions are highly organic, growing and flowing with great patience and care. But, like in nature, imperfections and incidentals are allowed to evolve producing sublimely primal and imperfect music. In a world where everything can be made perfect, Sano's work is deliciate, shimmering and electric; abolishing and preserving time simultaneously. 

Sano creates painterly music (he is also a painter) based on the themes of error and constraint. He is a visionary sonic architect who sees his musical structures as incomplete; always unfinished. His debut on Sun Ark Records in 2019 was very well received and his demo for Imprec was immediate and compelling. Lose yourself in these two long tape sides on the second official release from Akhira Sano.
