It feels like we’ve all been trying to process the madness of life over the last 18 months or so. With incomes cut, careers paused and anxiety peaking at dangerous levels, it’s fair to say we’ve all been on edge – and still are. But we shouldn’t let worry stop us from staying true to ourselves!

It’s a sentiment Selecta J-Man and Rider Shafique perfectly communicate on their latest single “Stay True” – a downtempo, jazzy number conveying messages about the struggles and reflections everyone has been experiencing amid a dragging pandemic. It’s the sort of honesty Rider Shafique’s lyricism has built a reputation for over the years, especially in his recent link up with Trex on “Undergrowth”.

This isn’t the first time Selecta J-Man and Rider Shafique have combined on a Born on Road production. You may remember the pair joining forces on the title track from Selecta J-Man’s Round Here EP in 2019. “Stay True” is certainly not as geared for the dancefloor as “Round Here”, but we have no doubt people will be blasting it through their speakers all the same!

Following hot on the heels of 2018’s ‘Influence’ album, Dope Ammo invites some of his close friends to paint a fresh coat of bass on the first selection of remixes. These updates come from some big names too with the initial batch presented by Ed Solo, Benny Page, Kleu and none other than the man himself.

‘Babylon Falling’ featuring Taiwan MC was always full of summertime vibes and fresh for 2019, Ed Solo takes that feel good factor and ramps up the dial to 11. A perfect example of how to add trademark techniques without complicating the original direction.

Kleu brings forth a re-edit of ‘Old Times’ featuring the vocal talents of Martin Carr and this time around, a slab of sinister bass notes that totally mix the feel of the original into something completely different. It works and it’s certainly going to take you by surprise!

Original bad man Benny Page takes control of ‘Saturday’ in the only style and fashion you would expect from this veteran producer. Sticking with the theme of commercial but credible, this one is certainly aimed at both radio airplay and ram jammed underground dancefloors alike. Lighters at the ready..

Dope Ammo finishes off the first batch of the remixes with ‘Repent’. Whilst the original was stripped back to 120bpm, this one certainly takes it up a notch by going through the grand old time stretching box of tricks a few times. An impressive take on what was something a bit different from 2018 album. Infectious vocals and hard bassline lead. No worries inna dance here!

Dope Ammo is certainly an unstoppable release machine this year and as we approach the end of 2019, he shows no signs of slowing down. Incoming remixes from the ‘Influence’ album featuring Levela, Blackley, Brian Brainstorm and Exile. We are going in!

Levela brings forth a clever mix of upfront jungle vibes crossed with grizzly low end, a perfect combination for a relick of ‘Badman Inna My Ends’. The memorable lyrics thrown down by Redders ride the new beat structure effortlessly which is certain praise to both lyricist and producer alike.

‘How We Get Down’ gets the Blackley treatment. A bouncy, hands in the air affair that pays respect to the original well. Driven predominantly by synth chords, squelch bass and interlinked with the original Jasmine Knight vocals, it’s certainly a contender for radio airplay.

Brian Brainstorm pays homage to his roots with a spectacular jungle takedown for the remix of ‘Flying’. Rough and tough breakbeats, rumbling low end and all kinds of clever fills create a one off trip to the 1994. It’s as if the original was made for this!

Exile delivers a predictably tough remix of Dope Ammo’s well supported ‘Wishin’ On A Star’ cover with flamethrower bass shots that will no doubt lick down heads across the globe. He also casually chucks in a few wicked breakbeats and old school stabs which compliment his rework nicely.

Dez and Serial Killaz have a great history together although he’s been slightly absent from our label for a while now. He’s like that long lost uncle who now and again turns up out of nowhere laden with dubplates which is exactly the kind of relative we like! Dez certainly lived up to expectations this time around with a weighty selection of 4 upfront jungle smashers for his ‘Dub Organizer’ EP.

Laced with Rodigan vocal shots and covered in reggae hooks, the lead tune ‘Dubplate’ takes a normal sub bass and reduces the threshold to below sea level. You would think with this level of low end Dez has some kind of superhuman hearing - that or a few SubPac’s strapped to his chest!

The title track ‘Dub Organizer’ rolls out huge chunks of beats, bass and vocals following the EPs theme of utter speaker devastation. ‘Shine Eye Girl’ throws out a lovely short of breath snare that perfectly slaps heads all over the dance. It also breaks through the mix to perfection, adding a certainly flair to the rumbling low end bass.

Locking things off with ‘Sound System’. A tune quite dissimilar to the previous 3 yet not out of place as you may be assuming. Technical switches in abundance and one potentially aimed as the crews taking it that little bit easier. We rollin’.

Gold Dubs have had a very busy year so far and to top it all off - a release on the biggest jungle label in existence. ‘Jungle Is Changing’ is certainly one hell of a bold statement, however, with some serious backing from Serial Killaz, it’s something we are all willing to roll with.

Hopping straight into the Gold Dubs spaceship and straight into oblivion with ‘Distress Call’. One for the hardstep crew with its filtered out breaks and midrange bass notes, a tune that would fit perfectly in both your DJ sets and homemade Sci Fi movies. Cheshire Cat provides some memorable lyrics on ‘Rise Up’, a tasty mix of reggae roots and upfront jungle warfare. Scatty breakbeats fire all kinds of direct shots over the perfectly written chorus which will stay in your head for months to come. Hold tight Fleck on the link up.

‘Now’ is a grotty little roller, pure in its form of providing nothing but filth to the dancefloor. No messing about, straight for the jugular. You really do need to hear this through a big rig, a basement studio or a decent pair of headphones to fully appreciate it. Gilly G, a name you might have heard of? No doubt if you’re a keen reggae fan he’s probably on your hit list already. Good news then as he’s all over ‘Random’, a riddim so tough even that bulletproof vest you’re reaching for is probably of no use.

Final track ‘The Jungle is Changing’ backs up the initial statement. Our music is changing, it’s been through a big 360 degree spin many times, sometimes butchered, sometimes championed and this track demonstrates one form of upfront jungle that reflects both the future and the past. Pull up that shit!
