Fifteen years ago, on February 15th, 1999, Harlem rapper Big L (aka Lamont Coleman) was tragically gunned down in the same neighborhood that he consistently repped in his rhymes. His murder came at a time when he had one of the most-talked about singles out, “Ebonics,” his D.I.T.C. crew was making major noise with posse cuts like “Day One,”and his mixtape and radio freestyles were scorching in the streets, which all led to his sophomore album being one of the most anticipated projects by a New York MC to drop. There were even rumors that he was signing to Roc-A-Fella Records, the hottest and most successful young label in the Big Apple at the time led by his rapper friend Jay Z. Unfortunately, his moment to shine at the next level never came.

To celebrate Big L’s rap career today on the fifteenth anniversary of his death, it was only right that we link up with our brethren at UpNorthTrips for a proper audio tribute to one of the greatest MCs of all time. Though Big L’s first album Lifestylez of da Poor & Dangerous is a classic in its own right, and he’s got plenty of notable singles and guest appearances in his catalog, we thought to truly highlight the essence of Big L’s lyrical greatness, charisma, performance ability, and bottomless pit of bars, we’d round up 15 of his dopest radio, mixtape, and live freestyles (plus a few bonuses because that’s how we do), and put them all together in one mix for you to enjoy.

Junglist Manifesto Recordings Presents: Chili Banks - "Astounding Science Fiction" LP "From the far horizons of the unknown come transcribed tales of new dimensions in time and space. 
These are stories of the future, adventures in which you'll live in a million could be years on a thousand maybe worlds". Astounding Science Fiction is Chili Banks' 3rd full length LP since the inception of Junglist Manifesto Recordings in 2009. 

The album is a themed album based on old time radio science fiction stories from the 40's and 50's. The stories first appeared in pulp magazines of the same era written by some huge names in sci-fi as well as some obscure ones. 

The tracks are audio vignettes, they are stand alone stories from a time when the world and universe was a less discovered place. 
Science fiction samples are mixed with organic drum sounds, sub basses, and a mix of new and old techniques.

The album serves as an exploration in the art of sampling and takes a step outside of dance floor Jungle/Drum & Bass. The album features 2 heavy hitting remixes by producer Bay B Kane. Join us on a trip through the universe.

CHILI BANKS - A STORY IN WAX 2

Bay B Kane returns after a long hiatus with his new full length L.P. "Jungle Love" A selection of laid back bad ass amen popping beats and sub basslines to warm the soul of any Junglist. The man returns with the sound that should have never left jungle in the first place. True School all the way

Bay B Kane began producing with Hip-Hop in 1986, and was quickly signed to T.U.F. Records where he began polishing his production craft. Flash to 3 years later he was hungry to really break through. BBK teamed up with Mr.E and started fusing Techno sounds with Breakbeats. The 2 formed "Break The Limits" & after a huge first release the duo got signed to XL Recordings.

In 1992 he launched Ruff Guidance Records & re-branded to who we now know as the legendary Bay B Kane! 1993 rolled in & BBK hooked up with Whitehouse Records. He released a slew of releases & did remixes for some of the biggest names in the history of Jungle. During this time he collaberated with the likes of PESHAY / MICKEY FINN / DARREN JAY / DJ TONIC(Para-T) / HOPPA / CHRIS ENERGY / LOXY / COOL HAND FLEX.... & released tunes under the monikers BAY B KANE / RINCA / ICON / KID THUNDER / INTELLIGENT JUNGLIST / DOUBLE TEE / MYSTRO / THE ROOD PROJECT / DARKENATOR.

During the period from 1989 to 1997 BBK released over 200 tracks on vinyl! After which he took a 13 year hiatus to get an Honors Degree at university, and move forward with other aspects of his life. In 2010 he decided to come back out of retirement. We are sure glad he did. BBK has joined us in 2011 to release his highly musical, smooth & hard album "Jungle Love".

This is the tape which DJ Krome & Time got the License sample from - Saxon vs Maverick in Leeds in 1985. You have Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Daddy Colonel and Trevor Sax and Muscle Head behind the controls.

Usual stuff, this audio file was recorded from a cassette to the computer.  I used Izotope RX and Adobe Audition to edit the audio passing it through a Master rack, enjoy!!!
