After the success of his "Bushey Hill Jazz House" EP which spent a number of months at #1 on the JunoDownload charts and his most recent single "Attation" set to reach similar heights, Postino is back! This time the wonderfully eclectic south korean whiz kid is taking a stab at dreamy, laid back minimal house. "Holy Deep" is a chilled-out slice of berlin influenced house music. The swirling pads, beeps and percussion flow in and out of the mix creating a wonderfully hypnotic, 7 minute soundscape that rewards repeat listening. But that's not all, the release also features 8 stunning and highly diverse remixes that span various areas of electronica, from big room electro house to minimal techno.
 
First up are two portuguese producers - Twofold and Gustavo Rodrigues. The two friends joined forces, bringing together Twofold's preference for melodic minimal techno and electronica and Gustavo's love of massive house beats. Injecting the track with flourishes of melody, that culminate in a huge bass line that kicks in mid breakdown, the guys have crafted a tuneful slice of deep house that will sound great at sunset or sunrise on the terraces of ibiza clubs this upcoming summer.
 
Next up is south korean minimal master Soolee, who sources the bleeping one-note lead synth of the original and builds a pounding techno groover over the top. The massive synth bass and minimalistic percussion will make this one a surefire favourite of any DJ with a preference for the darker corners of electronica.
 
For those of you with a hankering for big room electro house, then the Maximal Ratio remix will be right up your alley. The self proclaimed "synth nerd" and founder of the Egopolis label turns the laid back "Holy Deep" into a peak time dance floor destroyer filled to the brim with explosive beats and enough slamming peaks and dizzying breakdowns to make his remix the equivalent of a stomach churning sonic rollercoaster.
 
Based in Shanghai, B6 is a musician whose love of streamlined, elegant, no-frills minimal shines through on his darkly hypnotic take on Postino's original. This remix would not sound out of place in a Richie Hawtin DJ set and is sure to find it's way into many, many DJ cases.
 
Brazilian Yubaba, fills his remix with trancey syncopated pads and a chiming bell lead. An altogether loungier affair, his version of "Holy Deep" is filled with the warmth, groove and sunshine that could only come from south america.
 
Deep-Maker is a Russian producer and DJ whose passion for straight up house and lounge music are show cased through stabbing moog synth lines and a shaker-based groove that create the perfect platform for the siren-like bleeps that slide through his remix, creating moments of exquisite tension and release. Perfect for any forward thinking dancefloor.
 
Last, but most certainly not least, is Polish housemeister and Pierogi Records mainstay DJ Haze. Upon hearing Postino's original, Haze was so inspired that he came up with not one, but two remixes! Up first is the "Deep Mix" which aligns an arrestingly catchy bass line to an almost tribal groove - a surefire hit that will undoubtedly be played on big dance floors all over europe this summer. His "Holy Mix" is an altogether lighter affair, although not in the sense you would expect. While his first mix is undoubtedly a hands in the air moment, this second version is just as pounding but will elicit huge euphoric smiles from dancefloor patrons rather than screams and whoops.
 
All in all there is something here for DJs of all genres, making this another fantastic release from the up and coming korean mastermind Postino.

Dream With You - Postino

As a composer I’m inspired by nature, films, music and discovering new instruments and sound 
systems; so do memories of my childhood and the many experiences I’ve had in life. 
 
One sunny day in London, there were beautiful clouds spread across a blue sky. I wanted to 
describe the view with a sound. 
 
I first started with a four bar chord progression on piano, written in D key. 
 
Whenever I play the piano, I subconsciously start in Em7 since it gives me comfort. So, I only 
used a Supertonic (Em7) and Subdominant (G2), with a passing Mediant (F#m7) chord between 
them. The Em7 is played for the whole first bar, holding a doted crotchet in the second bar 
before moving on to the F#m7 and holding for the rest followed by a G2 for the third and fourth 
bars. This is the main theme for Eastern Cloud. 
In this composition, I avoided the use of Tonic (D) and Dominant (A) as they give me feelings of 
settling down. Clouds are always floating in the skies, restlessly on the move. I wanted to keep 
that feeling, so in the G2 Subdominant I sustained the note F# from the Mediant (F#m7) and 
released that note to the G in the fourth bar. I believe the sustained note expresses the slow, 
gradual movement of the clouds. 
 
Once I was happy with this chord progression and the voicing, I started creating the synthesizer 
sound with Imageline`s Toxic Biohazard. Armed with six oscillators and frequency modulation 
technology, it allows me to create very rich and powerful sounds. 
 
Activate oscillator one (sawtooth wave) and play the chord progression [00:01 - 00:09] 
Activate oscillator two (sawtooth wave) in one octave higher [00:09 - 00:17] 
Add oscillator three (sine wave) to give more warmth [00:17 - 00:24] 
Add oscillator four (sawtooth wave) in 5th above [00:24 - 00:32] 
Acetate unison with five voices to enrich and widen the sound; link the compressor inserted onto 
this synthesizer track with the kick drum  to enable sidechain compression, thereby giving a 
`pumping` feel reminiscent of the shape of the clouds [00:32 - 00:40] 
 
Once I was happy with this theme, I started working on a melody. There are not many things 
I can say about melody composition; I simply followed my feelings and attempted to grasp 
melodies that came to mind when I listened to the theme repeatedly. 
 
At this stage, I also plotted the song structure: 
 
Intro (16 bar) - Verse1 (8+8=16 bar) - Chorus A (8+8=16 bar) - Interlude A (8 bar) 
Verse2 (8+8=16 bar) - Interlude B (16 bar) - Chorus A (8+8=16 bar) 
[Transpose key +1] Chorus B (8+8=16 bar)*2 - Outro (Fade out) 
 
I was quite happy with the piano melody, but when I listened to this track a month later I felt 
a vocalized version would be much nicer. I adjusted the melody line to fit around my voice by 
smoothing over the unsteady parts, particularly in the chorus. 
 
After I modified the melody line, I started thinking about the lyrics: the story of this song. It is 
essentially a memory of someone`s love story in the past. After leaving his office, he somehow 
feels exhausted and depressed; he wanders around his favourite spots in the city amidst the 
drizzling rain, comforted by old memories of his past lover. He then realises he is still in love 
with her. 
 
Here are the translated lyrics: 
 
Days like today, I think of you again 
When you were still in love with me, and I with you. 
 
There was a time, when you would hold my hand 
But now that's history because you let it go. 
 
All of my heart belongs to you 
And still my soul, it longs for you 
When you look into my eyes and softly say goodbye 
I know I just can't move on from you 
And when I try I'm missing you 
You're looking into my eyes and telling my goodbye. 
 
There was a day, my mind was all made up 
I said I loved you and you answered with a smile. 
 
That was the time, our dreams matched perfectly 
You said you loved me and I felt like I could fly. 
 
All of my heart belongs to you 
And still my soul, it longs for you 
When you look into my eyes and softly say goodbye 
I know I just can't move on from you 
And when I try I'm missing you 
You're looking into my eyes and telling my goodbye. 
 
Once I finished recording the vocals, I listened to the song over and over: I felt it might be 
better if I added more power to the rhythm parts, and thought `Eastern Cloud` could be used as 
commercial pop music. 
 
Adding more power to the rhythm parts drowned out my vocals however, which lacked the 
punch and presence for such energetic music. 
 
I therefore decided to re-do the vocals with a professional vocalist - fortunately, my younger 
brother is a singer so I invited him to London from Korea. His voice is thicker and richer in 
comparison to mine, but still has a soft and mellow feel. Such vocal presence allowed me to 
add more power to the drums - and so, Eastern Cloud had finally reached full satisfaction. The 
sound was very `fat`, maintaining an air of softness and emotion despite the complete 100% 
reliance on synthesized sound. I was very happy with this version. 
 
A few weeks later, I realised this version was too strong to listen to and appreciate at any place 
or time; the vocals are soft and mellow, but the rhythm section was over-powering. 
 
When I was first inspired by clouds in the sky, I wanted to describe not only the shapes but 
also the colours, like white and blue - sky and cloud. Upon reflection, the picture I painted  for 
`Eastern Cloud` was all too grey. 
 
I decided to make a brand new version. Keeping the processing as simple as possible by using 
only one oscillator in Triangle wave form, I put a low-pass filter on it at around 400Hz to give 
a warm pad sound akin to that of a Sine wave form. I chose a Triangle wave form as opposed 
to Sine since I wanted to hear some harmonics on this sound; the latter do not have any 
harmonics and are therefore easily drowned out by other instruments. 
 
For the bass, I used a Moog base with two oscillators in sawtooth wave an octave higher, 
filtered through a low-pass with the envelope set to a fairly short decay time with no resonance 
to give a punchy, warm bass sound. 
 
For the drums, unlike the original `Eastern Cloud`, I used samples of a legendary drum machine 
in the 1980s`, the Linn Drums: a perfect match to the Moog bass sound in this arrangement 
 
I therefore finished another version of `Eastern Cloud`, bringing the total to four: 
 
1. Piano version 
2. + My vocals 
3. + Professional Singer 
4. Eastern Cloud 2 
 
When I organised the running order for a commercial release, I needed an intro track - but I did 
not want to create a new song. Instead, I wanted to make something very similar to the other 
tracks that would be very simple and also contain hidden emotions about `Eastern Cloud`. 
 
While I mixed the original track, I arranged a chorus harmony with Melodyne, a very powerful 
tool for tuning vocals and solo instruments; it also doubles as a harmonizer. A great deal of time 
and effort went into attaining that beautiful chorus line via Melodyne with just one single melody 
line. 
 
I took the chorus line, using only the main vocal track, to produce a beautiful acapella track: it 
contains a hook, lyrics and many masked emotions. It was an intro track that was done at the 
very last stage. 
 
Eastern Cloud Project 
 
지난 8월에 발매했던 저의 싱글 Eastern Cloud의 작업기(?)를 올려봅니다.

사실 이것은 대학원 졸업 포트폴리오 3가지 중에 한가지는 무엇을 할까 고민을 하다가 비록 한곡이지만 엄청나게 많은 시간과 노력을 투자한 이 프로젝트가 떠올라 작업했던 히스토리들을 아카데미컬하게 분석해서 제출을 했고 꽤 좋은 반응을 받았었습니다.
본인의 작업을 그렇게까지 분석을 해보았던것도 처음이었던듯 하네요.

이 곡에 대한 첫 스케치를 시작한 순간부터 싱글로 발매하기까지 1년이라는 짧지 않은 시간이 걸렸고 편곡된 버젼만 14개가 넘네요. 사용된 프로젝트 용량도 어마어마.... 사용하고 있는 컴퓨터가 그리 신통치 않기에(Power mac G5 2.7 Dual) 자주 바운스를 쳐서 그런것도 있긴 하겠지요.

첨부된 곡은 총 14개의 편곡들중 각각 가지에 끝점에 다달았다고 생각되는 6개의 버젼만을 하나로 연결시킨 것입니다.

곡을 쓰게 되는 동기는 많은 분들도 그렇겠지만 감성적인 이유에서 가장 먼저 시작이 되구요 그 다음은 새로운 소리 새로운 악기에서 동기를 얻는 경우가 많습니다.

이곡을 처음 쓸때는 2009년 8월. 
제가 살고있는 이곳 런던은 여름이 참 아름답습니다. 해도 무척 길구요. 마지 옛날 한국의 가을 날씨가 여름 내내 이어집니다. 가을은 제가 가장 좋아하는 날씨 이기도 하구요. 그 이유는 '구름'때문입니다.
한국의 높고 푸른 가을 하늘과 구름을 너무 사랑하고 그모습을 여름내내 볼수 있는 런던의 여름도 참 좋아합니다.

그래서 그 구름을 표현하고 싶었습니다 ㅎㅎ. [1] (위에 보이는 플레이어에 해당 번호 구간을 참고하세요.)

당시 즐겨듣던 mellow 한 Progressive House에서 빠지지 않고 등장하는 신스 소리가 왠지 구름의 몽실몽실한 형태를 표현하는데 최적일거 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

이 소리를 만드는것은 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 사용하는 신스마다 그 개성이 약간 틀리게 나오겠지만 기본적으로 옥타브로 레이어 된 Sawtooth 파형을 엔벨로프 필터링을 한 후 컴프레서 등으로 킥에 사이드 체이닝을 해서 pumping sound를 만들어주는것입니다. 제경우에는 6개의 오실레이터가 있는 Image-Lind 의 Toxic biohazard 를 사용했습니다. Unison 된 소리가 아주 풍성하고 넓게 나와 아주 좋아하는 신스지만 CPU를 너무 잡아먹어 자주 사용못하고 있는 놈입니다..
우선 이 소리 자체만으로 구름의 형태를 표현하는건 어느정도 해결이 되었구요.

하늘에 유유히 떠다니는 그 모습을 표현할수있는 방법과 그것을 바라보는 저의 느낌은 조금 더 화성적인 면으로 표현하고 싶었습니다.
첫 코드는 Em7 이였는데요. 그것으로 결정한 이유는 딱히 없습니다. 제 습관적인 보이싱과 Toxic으로 만들어낸 신스가 가장 풍성하게 표현되는 코드가 단지 그것이였을 뿐이였구요.
Em7을 첫마디 와 두번째 마디 절반정도까지 이어 연주 하고  F#m7으로 나머지 두번째 마디를 채운후 3번째 마디에서 GM9로 도달합니다. GM의 7음인 F#은 마지막 마디에서 G해결을 시킵니다. 이유는 GM9의7음인 F#은 바로 전 코드 F#m7의 근음 이기도 합니다. 이것을 한마디 정도 지연시킴으로서 서서히 변해가는 구름의 모습을 떠올릴 수가 있었습니다. 그리고 이곡의 조성은 D 입니다.
하지만 곡의 어느 부분에서도 Chord D(Tonic)는 나오지 않습니다.
2도와 4도 화음만 사용함으로서 정착되지 않은 계속 진행중인 느낌을 표현하려 했으며 그것은 하늘에 떠 있는 구름을 묘사하기도 합니다.

이렇게 4마디의 메인 페턴을 완성을 한 후 멜로디를 쓰기 시작했습니다.[2]

전 항상 아주 신서틱한 사운드와 또, 아주 자연적인 사운드를 조합시키는것을 좋아합니다. 그간 릴리즈했던 거의 모든 House 트랙도 이런 형식을 따릅니다.. 그래서 이곡도 완벽한 전자음으로만 구성된 반주에 피아노라는 가장 일반적이고 대중적인 악기로 멜로디를 쓰기 시작했구요.
그것이 이 과정에서 대략적인 곡의 구성도 완성이 됩니다.

항상 멜로디를 이렇게 나중에 쓰는것은 아니구요 상황에따라 틀립니다.

이렇게 곡을 완성하구나서 보니 꽤 만족스러운 Chill out, Lounge 계열의 음악이 되었군요. 믹싱도 끝내고 언제나 그랬던것처럼 한동안 저의 아이팟에 재생목록 1순위로 올라가있었습니다.

그리고 몇주후 다시 그곡을 듣게 되었을때 왠지 '노래'곡으로 해도 좋겠다라는 생각이 들더군요.[3]

피아노 멜로디를 그대로 저의 목소리로 부르려고 하니 제 창법과 어울리지 않은곳도 있고 음역에서도 문제가 되는 부분이 있어서 멜로디를 수정하기 시작했습니다.

수십번의 테스트와 수정작업끝내 멜로디를 마무리 지었구요. 다음단계는
'작사' 였습니다.
작사는 언제나 힘듭니다.
작곡만큼 어렵고 힘든 일이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 개인적으론 정말 곡의 의미를 열배는 더 강화시켜주는 중요한 힘이 있다고 생각합니다.
어떤때는 신기하게도 한번 쓰기 시작하면 술술나올때도 있습니다.
또 어떤때는 아무생각없이 툭 튀어나온 한구절의 가사가 동기가 되어 나머지 모든 부분을 채워주는 경우도 있습니다. 
저의 경우는 주로 음악에 취해 쓰는 경우가 많습니다.
자신이 작곡한 음악에 자신이 취하는거... 참 꼴이 별루이지만;;;
그리고 전 항상 '시간'과 관계된 것을 말합니다.
추억, 기억 대부분 지난 시간에 대한 미련 등이 저의 주 소재가 됩니다.

이곡에 대해서는 '구름'이라는 소재로 곡을 쓰기 시작했지만 왠지 마른하늘에 비내리는 오후 가 떠올랐습니다. 그리고 왠지 기운없는 하루.

비가오네 참 길었던 오늘
차가운 바람결에 한숨을 쉬고
터벅터벅 이 거리로 나와
우울한 하루를 또 혼자 걷는 나.

조금씩 희미해지는 너와의 기억을 모아
오늘 하루쯤은 널 떠올리려해
소리없이 짙어져가는 세월의 고단함에도
이렇게 가끔은 널 떠올리곤해

음.. 점점 멀어져가
모든것이 우리였던 너와의 시간
부슬부슬, 오늘 이 비 처럼
조용히 내마음을 적셔 오는 너

조금씩 희미해지는 너와의 기억을 모아

소리없이 짙어져가는 세월의 고단함에도
이렇게 가끔은 널 떠올리곤해

모든게 변해가는데 내 맘도 변해가는데
이렇게 아직 널 그리워 하고 있어
이젠 그래야 하는데 너를 보내야 하는데
이렇게 아직도 널 사랑 하고 있어


이렇게 가사도 완성하고 본인의 목소리로 녹음을 해보았습니다.[4]

피아노 버젼과 함께 아주 차분하고 따뜻한 느낌으로 마무리가 되었다고 생각을 했습니다. 하지만 몇주가 지나 다시 들어보았을때 느낌은 '뭔가 조금더 커머셜한 느낌으로 가는건 어떨까?' 였습니다. 그리고 한국에대한 그리움이 커졌었는지 왠지 정식으로 발매를 하는건 어떨까 하는 욕심도 났구요.

그래서 조금씩 리듬파트들을 수정해나가기 시작했습니다.[5]

왠지 방향을 잡아갈때쯤... 점점더 강해지는 리듬 파트들에비해 저의 목소리가 따라주지 못하다는 생각이 들었고 아예 전문 보컬리스트를 섭외해 다시 녹음해야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 리듬도 더 확실하게 강하게 갈수 있을듯 했구요. 한국에서 싱어송 롸이터로 열심히 노력하고 있는 저의 친동생이기도 한 E.p ho군을 런던으로 불러왔습니다.

그리고 노래 녹음. 예상했던데로 만족스러운 결과가 나왔고 훨신더 커머셜한 리듬과 사운드로 마무리 질 수 있었습니다. 당시, 그리고 지금까지 일랙트로닉 뮤직씬에서 한창 유행을 타고 있는 멜로딕 프로그래시브 하우스의 사운드를 만족스럽게 표현해냈다고 생각을 했었습니다.[6]

또 다시 시간을 두고 모니터링... 이번엔 여전히 마음에 들었습니다.^^
하지만 한가지... 원래의 작곡 의도에서 너무 벗어난것이 아닐까? 라는 생각이 들었습니다.
구름, 쓸쓸함, 조용한 속삭임.. 등의 이미가 여전히 남아있기는 하지만 그것들보다는 사운드(반주) 자체의 존재감이 훨신 더 앞으로 나와있다는 느낌이 들었습니다.
그리고 그 생각이 들자마자 아예 새로운 편곡에 들어갔습니다. 목소리만 남겨둔채로 말이죠.

새로운 편곡에 사용된 모든 소리들은 그야말로 basic 입니다.[7]

80년대 pop음악을 장식하던 Linn drum 과 moog bass 그리고 역시나 과감하게 필터링된 sawtooth파형으로만 이루어진 pad 를 기본으로 그것도 하루만에 뚝딱 만들었습니다. 지금까지 버젼들보다 훨씬 더 멜로디가 강조 되었구요. 덕분에 가사에도 쉽게 집중 할수 있었습니다.

그리고... 어찌보면 리믹스 버젼인 이 곡이.... 오리지널로 바뀌어 버립니다.;;;;
1년 가까이 공들여 만들었던 트랙들보다 하루만에 완성한 이 버젼이 정말 편안하고 따뜻하게 들리더라구요.
하지만 그 1년간의 여러가지 테스트와 과정이 없었다면 이 오리지널이라고 명칭된 Remix도 없었을것입니다.

마지막에 들으실 수 있는 아카펠라 버젼은 Meodyne 으로 일일이 편집된것입니다.[8]
사실은 [6]번 과정에서 코러스로서 사용하기 위해 E.p ho군의 목소리로 녹음된 기본적인 코러스라인을 더 세밀하게 분해해서 만든 화성들이였는데 나중에 그것들만 따로 들어보니 꽤 그럴듯한 아카펠라로 들려서 싱글에 인트로로 장식을 하게 되었네요. 오리지널 버젼을 위한 화성은 따로 또 작업이 되었지만 그 화성은 왠지 아카펠라로만 들었을때 어딘가 빈약한 부분이 있어서 [6]번 과정의 코러스를 사용했습니다.

휴... 이렇게 싱글은 발매가 되었고 앞으로도 몇개의 싱글을 더 발표할 계획입니다.
해외에서 한국으로 발매하는 첫 싱글이였어서 발매후 홍보하는 과정에 많은 시행 착오가 있었지만
그만큼 다음 프로젝트는 무언가 더 매끄럽게 많은 분들에게 들려줄수 있을거라 생각합니다.^^

이곳 영국에서 계속해서 진행하고 있는 House music producer 로서의 활동과 동시에
한국인이고 한국음악을 듣고 자라왔기에 '가요'창작에대한 욕심도 끝까지 열심히 채워보려 합니다..

요즘 날이 추워서인지 여러가지 신경쓸일이 많아서 인지 몸도 귀도 너무 피곤해 앞으로 얼마간은 예전에 좋아하던 음악들을 찾아 들으며 휴식기를 가져야 할듯합니다...

80년대 음악이 너무 좋네요 요즘...ㅎㅎ
