Flight Facilities Decade Mix: 1972-1982

The Balearic Gabba Soundsystem is back, back with a new EP that features three more leftfield remixes from curious electronic specialist Enzo Elia that have all been licensed officially by Irma Records. The source material for his three unhinged reworks is a track by 90s Italian house duo Soft House Company and two from cult Italian DJ and producer Don Carlos.

Soft House Company released only two EPs, both in 1990, but made a big impact with them: pretty much everyone has heard ‘What You Need’ and that’s the track that gets remixed here. Elia turns it into a slightly more bouncy and disco leaning cut with raw silvery drums, huge vamping piano chords and those classic vocal cries and already Eddie C and Gerd Jansen have been playing it. At the breakdown there is the sound of waves breaking on a beach before pianos go wild: It’s a freewheeling and sure fire party starting track that still does the trick nearly quarter of a century after original release.

Don Carlos was behind such seminal club tracks as 1991’s ‘Alone’ and produced five studio albums in the nineties and naughties. He fuses Afro rhythms with deep house vibes and has DJed all over the world since the 70s. The first of his to get re-worked is ‘Overture’, which starts with tropical bird cries, whistles and loon calls. It’s the sound of a humid jungle that gets slowly consumed by lush pads, delicate piano melodies and stirring string sounds. With a truly magical atmosphere and uplifting joyousness permeating the whole thing, it cannot fail to make you feel on top of the world.

Finally, Elia tackles ‘Chicago’ (a track that’s already been supported by Soft Rocks) and does so with swathes of mesmeric effects. Organic hand congas, breathy vocal snippets and a bristling nebula of synths, pads and strings all dance around each other in reservedly euphoric symphony.

This might just be one of the most beautifully and bizarrely Balearic releases yet from the ever unhinged Balearic Gabba Soundsystem.

It was a decade best summed up by podcasts, cancel culture, fake news and memeing our way through tragedy and triumph. But was 2012-2022 any crazier than eras past, or was it that the prevalence of social media put major international events on our digital doorsteps? A Hollywood star becoming the leader of the free world? Bizarre… but it wasn’t the first time. 

Obscure global events just felt more tangible than ever, and we were all finally able to have our say. Communication with pop stars and major companies was instantaneous, and stardom was diluted by the ability for strangers to become a viral sensation overnight. 

With the advance of accessible technology came the explosion of bedroom producers like Flume, who would dictate the direction and popularity of an entire genre. At a glance, many could argue it was the death of originality in pop culture, with covers, remixes, sequels, prequels and remakes dominating the mainstream. The recent emergence of AI will either give those creative minds the resources to forge a new path into 2032, or accelerate us into repetition.

Presenting his long awaited full-length album, the king of disco re-edits Dr Packer graces Glitterbox Recordings with six brand new mixes alongside twelve of his rare cuts and well-loved treasures. Dr Packer’s Different Strokes features Dr Packer versions of soulful house favourites, disco standards and groove-laden floorfillers. Following two DJ mixes from Dr Packer featuring bonus tracks, the album kicks off with a bonafide classic. Dr Packer’s take on Soulsearcher’s ‘Can’t Get Enough!’ maintains all its most iconic elements, the euphoric vocals and timeless groove given a fresh-sounding elasticity. Another highlight and an album exclusive, ‘Big Love’ from Peter Heller’s Big Love is brim full of Dr Packer’s unmistakeable warmth, cowbell accents giving the groove some bump. Next is Dr Packer’s remix of The Shapeshifter’s evergreen ‘Lola’s Theme Recut’ followed by another album exclusive, Candi Staton’s ‘Hallelujah Anyway’. Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz featuring Marc Evans ‘The Way You Love Me’ (Dr Packer Extended Remix) is the third new cut, followed by another new remix for this album, Dr Packer’s version of Johnny Corporate’s ‘Sunday Shoutin’’, picking up the pace with a funking bassline to suit any dynamic disco set. More highlights include Dr Packer’s versions of ‘When Love Breaks Down’ by The Shapeshifters featuring Teni Tinks and ‘Set It Out’ from Purple Disco Machine & Boris Dlugosch, both brand new remixes. Dr Packer has done it again – breathing new life into your most beloved dance records so you can fall in love with them all over again.

Flight Facilities Decade Mix: 1982-1992

This is the final instalment of the decade mixes. But this time it's a little bit different.

This is the decade that turned us into what we are now. This mix is effectively our condensed dance music bible (believe it or not, there are lots of tunes we couldn't fit in). The mix is done in the same style in which we remember our clubbing experiences. Most notably, The Bang Gang parties every Friday night in Sydney. Those guys were a HUGE part of why we became DJ's in the first place. This mix will, for better or worse, dig up a few dance-floor 'moments' for anyone who took part in the madness. 

So many of these songs are classics to us, and probably are to many others too. It's hard to hear these songs without cracking a smile and remembering a great time of irresponsibility. 

You won't find too many mixtapes in this style anymore. And certainly not from us. But we had to show what this decade was all about to us, and how it brought us to what we do today.  

We're dedicating this mix to our belated friend and mentor, Ajax. He's had more influence on this final chapter than anyone will ever know.

Thanks to everyone who got behind these mixes. It's been a long ride.
