First Move, Then Many is a folk grounded response to nonstop aggression. A strong folk and folk rock pulse runs through the piece, like people on the streets and in their homes, absorbing hit after hit yet still moving together. Over that, nu jazz and jazztronica touches colour the harmony and groove, giving the music a modern, restless edge, while subtle synthpop shades keep the energy bright and alert rather than crushed.

There is something battle worn and ominous in the way the motifs repeat, but the rhythm and phrasing keep pushing forward like a quiet march that will not stop. Melodic lines rise almost like an anthem, repeating the same message in different shapes: we have a right to exist, and you cannot take that away. While the title points to the first move and then many that follow, the piece focuses on how people respond to those blows, staying united, stubbornly hopeful and emotionally present as the wave of aggression rolls on.

About the album

First Move, Then Many is Movement VII of Whirl: Ukraine in Sound, an instrumental cinematic and neo classical suite with symphonic metal intensity and Eastern European folk and Balkan colour. Across 15 movements the album follows a journey from peace to war, through loss and mourning, and toward a scarred return to calm, written from the perspective of those living through aggression rather than watching from afar.
