In My Head

Scottish singer-songwriter, Calum Baird, returns with Mi Verdad, a powerful and intimate track that blends raw emotion with a bold, sonic palette reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, Billy Bragg and Springsteen.  Written and recorded in June during his Germany tour, the song represents a sharp turn from his usual acoustic-driven sound, this time built around an electric guitar, expansive reverb, and a vocal performance that mixes confessional half-speech and engaging melody.

Mi Verdad (“My Truth”) is a reflection on the weight of words left unsaid. The track captures both fragility and strength — its lyrical honesty balanced against atmospheric layers that echo with tension and release. Lines like “I’m not over apologising / At worst, I’m philosophising” and “ Like a nod across a crowded room / I’m holding it for a while, and I’ll move on soon” carry the duality of vulnerability and resilience. 

The song builds on Calum’s reputation for politically and emotionally charged songwriting, but here the focus is purely personal: universal and profoundly human themes of regret, reflection, and connection. At little more than 3 minutes long, Mi Verdad manages to be both concise and expansive — a song that feels timeless and immediate all at once.

With its haunting reverb, deliberate space, and a vocal performance that walks the line between tenderness and urgency, Mi Verdad is one of Calum Baird’s most affecting releases to date.

many years ago i became obsessed with the song сон и пустота (son i pustota) by the russian electro-punk band fanny kaplan. i then looked up who this was and i dunno, it just stuck a note. the heroes who try to keep revolutions revolving when opportunists decide that nah, i'm in power now, we can stop. i actually had a completely different song called 'fanny kaplan' for the longest time but then i transposed the subject onto this other piece and it just clicked. then i heard the 4 part harmony and i was off

This song came together while Diane was still at her home in Greece, and completed once she was back in the UK. Kevin sent some crunchy percussion, fat bass sounds and hypnotic drones. Diane began by looping and stitching these together. 

Maybe it was the building work going on at a construction site across the ravine from her Cretan home that caused her to start adding samples of power tools! Next, she got out her midi keyboard and added some weird bubbly sounds and wicked subs—and that extraordinary middle section of brass and guitars.

There followed a month of ill health, and this, together with lots of mundane domestic crises, slowed down work for the duo on both sides of the Atlantic. This enforced hiatus gave an opportunity for the grim political landscape around the globe to wrap its deadly tentacles of despair around the pair, sapping their strength and threatening to throttle the creative processes, but in the end, their battle against the forces of darkness helped form the theme of the song. 
 
At last, a melody was written that suited the many different textures and complexities of the emerging song. Lyrically, things came together surprisingly quickly, the first two lines falling into place out of nowhere, inviting Diane to follow them to see where they might lead. Some of the lyrics remain mysterious, like images glimpsed in a fever dream, but no doubt reflecting the turmoil of the weeks that spawned them, and the hope that pulls us all through.
 
After the storm we’ll build a garden

And in the rumour there will be murder.

And so we wait for dawn in this afterlight,
