When I was going through old tapes in my parents’ basement to put together a collection of my dad’s music for him for Christmas, I also found some old tapes of mine from when I was a teenager. This song is from one of those tapes. The sound quality isn’t great, especially in one spot in the bridge. I’m sure it didn’t start out sounding as good as I thought it did back then, and nearly 30 years in a box in a humid basement didn’t help any. 

I wrote this song when I was in high school, and was dating a girl whose dad was a drummer who left her and her mom to go off to California to play in a band. My favorite songwriters were all storytellers, and I didn’t really have any stories of my own to tell, so I tried to tell hers.

This recording is from the summer after I graduated from high school in 1997. I recorded it on a Yamaha 4 track that a friend of mine gave me. I played guitar and sang both parts. My little brother, who would have been 15 at the time, played the harmonica part. He was, and is, an incredible musician who can play most anything, but back then his main instrument was harmonica. He played that thing all day every day, and you can really hear the John Popper influence here. 

He and I went on a couple of years later to play in a band together that still is, to this day, probably the best band I’ve ever been in. I found some stuff from that band in the basement as well, and will post some of it sometime soon.
