The Sorbs Story - Lusatia Voices
Origins and History of the Sorbs (Sorbs) from Ancient Times
🌱 1. Early Slavic Origins (6th–7th Centuries)
• Between the 6th and 7th centuries, several West Slavic tribes migrated to the area between the Elbe and Saale rivers, in what is now eastern Germany.

• Among these tribes were the Lusizers, who settled in the region now known as Lusatia (Lausitz), divided into Upper Lusatia and Lower Lusatia.

• From these tribes emerged the group that would later be called Sorbs (Sorben, Serbja, Serby).

🏛️ 2. Consolidation in Lusatia (8th–10th Centuries)
• The Slavic tribes of the area developed local political structures and their own distinct culture.

• The region was sparsely populated before their arrival, which facilitated their permanent settlement.

• Their language—the ancestor of modern Upper and Lower Sorbian—became a key defining characteristic.

⚔️ 3. Germanic Expansion and Loss of Autonomy (10th–12th Centuries)
• Between the 10th and 12th centuries, the Holy Roman Empire advanced eastward in a process known as the Ostsiedlung.

• Most of the Slavic tribes in the region lost their political autonomy.

• Even so, the Sorbs preserved their language and customs, which allowed them to survive as a distinct group.

🕍 4. Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period: Cultural Resistance
• Over the centuries, the Sorbs maintained:
• their language (two variants: Upper and Lower Sorbian),
• their religion (Catholicism and Lutheranism),
• and their traditions (clothing, music, rituals).

• The Lusatia region passed through the hands of different states (Bohemia, Saxony, Prussia), but the Sorbian community continued to exist.

5. 19th–20th Centuries: Germanization and State Pressure
• With the formation of the modern German state (late 19th century), Germanization policies were implemented:
• linguistic restrictions,
• pressure to abandon Sorbian in schools and administration,
• cultural assimilation.

• Despite this, the language survived thanks to family transmission and its own cultural institutions.

6. East Germany (GDR): Limited Recognition
• In the GDR, Sorbs were recognized as a national minority, with cultural and educational rights.

• Teaching in Sorbian and the existence of cultural institutions were permitted, although always under the ideological control of the socialist state.

🌳 7. Current Situation (20th–21st Centuries)
• Today, Sorbs live mainly in:
• Brandenburg (Lower Lusatia)
• Saxony (Upper Lusatia)
• They are an officially recognized minority in Germany.

• It is estimated that there are around 60,000 speakers remaining in Germany, with smaller communities in Poland and the Czech Republic.

• The Spreewald is the cultural heartland of Lower Sorb, where the language, religion, and traditional customs are still preserved.

🎨 Sorbian Cultural Identity
• Languages: Upper Sorb (more vibrant), Lower Sorb (more endangered).

• Religion: Catholic in Upper Lusatia; Lutheran in Lower Lusatia.

• Traditions: festive costumes, Sorbian Easter, choral music, crafts.

• Historical territory: Sorbia (Sorbia), the cultural name for Lusatia.
