What if the song "Uptown Funk" had a sequel? And what if that sequel took the form of a corps-style drumline cadence? In that headspace, "Smalltown Funk" was conceived for the Winfield High School Drumline in 2016. From funky grooves that will get everyone in the stadium dancing to jarring metric changes that will keep the rest of the band on their toes, this jam is not for the student who is faint of heart, or the instructor who is short of patience (or ambition!). It features double strokes, triple strokes, 16th-note syncopations and metric modulations galore, and as is my style, contains an abundance of textures and sounds. It is as groovy as it is tricky. Admit it - you want this cadence.

Crescendos leading to hand changes help students use their wrist muscles to "dig out" the doubles while being conscious of stick heights. 1234 Legatos is a solid starter warmup for your whole drumline, but with special care given to your bass line. This exercise includes 4 different variations of single-stroke bass splits; single hit 8th notes, duplet 16th notes, triplet 16th notes, and single-stroke fours in 32nd note form.

This is my third attempt at using the native sounds of a common Rubber Chicken to make a beat. This piece is a radical departure from the first two uploads which were loosely inspired by Indian tabla music.

I began composing almost as soon as I learned to read music, and in college I flirted with the idea of becoming a composition major, but ultimately remained in education. I'm currently the Guitar/Piano/Percussion teacher at Hurricane High School in West Virginia. I specialize in writing technical exercises for percussion and guitar. I play in several Christian bands and at my church (reGenerationWV) I'm on the worship team, the band leader team, and I teach classes through its educational outreach program, The Living Room Collective. I've composed for marching and concert percussion ensembles, popular music ensembles, and have recently started composing for short-form videos. I have a plethora of unfinished/unreleased works for band, percussion, and orchestra as well.
