“Crescent Moon” is a setting of a haiku, written by 18th century Japanese poet Yosa Buson. The text evoked to me such a mood of contemplation and emotion that it stood out to me as extremely picturesque. To help convey these characters, the piece makes an attempt to reflect the traditions of Japanese music, specifically traditional shakuhachi playing. One will also notice the tendencies of the style, through the use of glissandi, waving vibratos, and overblowing. The piece begins with an introduction to the vocalist which is setting in motion sounds that will be recalled later on. The flute and voice take turns speaking but also share moments alone, displaying their reflections of the text.

"Foggy Dew" is another setting of the Irish ballad written after 1919 by Charles O'Neill. The text describes a historical event of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland. This setting makes use of the piccolo, and makes an attempt to imitate the sounds, the register and the embellishments of the pennywhistle which is a common staple instrument in most Irish folk music. A very small, thrusting gesture in the piccolo, going from the bottom of its range to the top begins the movement and then echoes throughout.

The third setting, named "Parizade", is based roughly on the story "Parizade and the Singing Tree" from the collection of folk tales in Arabic "One Thousand and One Nights". This movement makes use of the alto flute, which plays variations on Masmoudi, an Arabic drum rhythm. The flute carries the rhythm under and over the soprano while she narrates the hero's story. Because of the difficulties of singing archaic text, it was necessary to adapt it for rhythmic simplification which is easier to be sung.
