Encoded Vicious Circle Part 2 (Midlands Edition) May 6th 2023

Recorded on cassette at Leeds University in December 1999 with Soundlab beltdrive Turntables & a Numark Mixer when I was a teenager!

At this time I'd just come back from Ibiza where I worked as a flyer boy for Trade and experienced Trade at El Divino on my first night in Ibiza. For a straight boy it was quite eye opening! 

After being devoted to Gatecrasher in the late 90's, I was a regular on the dance floor at Sundissential Birmingham and Sundissential North where this new sound was blossoming, reaching a second phase after coming out of Trade London. 

The anticipation of the 1999/2000 Millennium NYE celebrations were in the air. This was a beautiful unifying moment for humanity and so much time, effort & money was poured into the party scene plus luckily the vinyl dance music industry still had generous funding after coining it through the 80's & 90's. 

To experience all this happening as a teenager was phenomenal. The parties were proper parties! Joy was the norm. You'd have the best night of your life every weekend. The music was fresh, full of energy, optimism & hope for a better future.  

Then the 2001 Dotcom bubble burst and recession hit, reducing the revenue streams for both the nightlight and dance music industry. Napster & Limewire nearly killed off vinyl as during a recession, most people chose to download for free and burn to CD instead of buying the wax. 

The Analogue World was scared of the digital future as it was ruthlessly cost free. Musicians and DJs could only make decent money with performance - not so much sales. There was no itunes, only Bangingtunes.com! 

I was working in the vinyl section of Kokon To Zai at the time and felt the drop in momentum (...and also quality of production which became more digital, with compressed mp3s sounding weak on a big system). 

Music studios all over sold their 808's, 909's, Junos, Akai Samplers and rack gear for cheaper PC or MAC digital alternatives. In 2002 I worked on a track in Tripoli Trax studios and was a bit shocked to find all was being made on an Apple Mac G4.

Everything felt different. The comedown for clubs after Millenium hit hard. Huge multi-million new venues like HOME went bust by 2001. Even EGG had a rough ride at the start. It was a tough time to get into the industry!

But in '99 it was incredible. I hope this mix still has that energy for you and brings back some great memories! All comments most welcome...
