Cette performance constitue un détournement de la pratique du DJ. Et si, au lieu de contrôler les machines, nous collaborions, laissant ainsi place à l'erreur et au défaut ? Tous les codes du DJing sont repris et altérés ; la boucle de l'emblématique titre "Satisfaction" de Benny Benassi est doublée, décalée, étirée et compressée, évoquant un rythme qui n'est plus entraînant mais contraignant. Le bruit analogique granuleux du vinyle devient imparfait, n'est plus corrigé, et prend le dessus sur sa propre composition.

This performance is a subversion of DJ practice. What if, instead of controlling the machines, we collaborated, leaving room for error and imperfection? All the codes of DJing are taken and distorted; the loop of the iconic track "Satisfaction" by Benny Benassi is doubled, shifted, stretched, and compressed, invoking a rhythm that is no longer catchy but constraining. The granular analog noise of the vinyl is left imperfect, not corrected, and takes precedence over its own composition.

Can I get My Satisfaction, 2023 (mixer, 4deck controller DJ, laptop, stereo speaker and subwoofer)

Following a counterproductive logic, Can I Get My Satisfaction is a live set where the equipment of a DJ is pushed to its limits. Stretched until it becomes unrecognizable, Benny Benassi’s famous track is transformed in a way that counters its musicality. Progressively, the grainy analog noise of a vinyl record overtakes the composition and erases the music through its materiality.

Thus, the setup intended to make a crowd dance produces distorted noises, symptomatic of a rebellious and defective machine. Like Donna Haraway, for whom cyborgs result from the fusion of humans and machines, this hybrid performance proposes a new form of collaboration between the DJ and their equipment.

Justine Ferrer (she/her), is a Brussels-based visual and sound artist, dismantles the rigidity of electronic music, making its precise rhythms bleed into dysfunction. Navigating between the frenetic tempos of jungle and the weighty, tectonic pulses of dubstep, her work fractures the conventions of club music, creating moments of rupture that challenge and expand its boundaries.
