Just Jacob - Live DJ Mix Playlist

Natasha Kmeto is an outstanding artist currently based in Portland, Oregon. I had the chance to remix her song "Deeply" earlier this year, and the turning of the summer seemed like the perfect time to share it here. I like to heavily alter most remixes I do, but in this case, I introduced just one sample beyond the original song's stems, viz. a recording I made crumpling a couple pieces of paper and dropping the resulting ball on a table. I manipulated the living daylights out of that palette of not-particularly-musical sounds to construct a scope of percussive and tonal extrapolations from the spirit of the original track. In addition, I used some old school phasing techniques to isolate and then layer various sections of the original song's stems beyond what had been made available to me in the first place, adding more depth to the track in homage to one of Natasha's favorite producers (and one of my chief influences), J Dilla.

Natasha Kmeto - Deeply (Just Jacob Bootleg)

At special request by my buddies and beloved fans, here's the second chunk of my New Year Mix for 2015. (Click this link to check out the first chunk: https://soundcloud.com/justjacobmusic/just-jacob-new-year-mix-2015-side-a)I built this mix around 41 tracks I found myself repeatedly returning to over the past year across multiple genres with a special emphasis on garage, bass, R&B, hip hop, and club. The more I produce and DJ, the more I gravitate towards the groovier yet also glitchier side of music that inspired me to pick up this game in the first place, and these tracks stand as a testament to that part of my journey. 2014 was a great year filled with multiple victories but also fraught by setbacks and challenges. My hope for you is that this mix will inspire you to reach further and enjoy more deeply all that life has to offer in the year ahead as you listen to music from artists spread all across the world who are trying to do that same thing in their own way, too.

Aside from things like gain adjustment for optimal playback volume, there are no additional edits that I introduced after capturing this recording straight from my Traktor DVS / Pioneer DJM 900 nexus set up. In other words, all of the effects and edits you hear in this mix were accomplished live using things like cue points, pitch / fade adjustments, hardware effects knob twisting, and so forth--exactly the same as you would encounter at one of my live sets. Just Jacob - New Year Mix 2015 - Side B

This might be the most important mix I've posted to this profile so far. It represents years of research into the work of outstanding Native American artists creating music at the highest quality across multiple genres, from traditional vocal arrangements and experimental orchestral works to hip hop, bass, house, and indie folk tracks. I'm deeply inspired by each of these master songwriters, performers, and producers, and I hope everyone explores their catalogs at length. Since I limited this mix to tracks made available for free download, I'm particularly happy that I can share a free download of this mix that perpetuates the generosity of the artists I've featured here. 

Clocking in at just over 20 minutes, this is not only the most stylistically eclectic mix I've shared to date but also by far the most challenging to mix well. I learned about this dope, Angolan style of musical called kizomba during my last tour to L.A. in December 2014 from a good friend named Abraham Meisel, who was visiting from New Jersey. (He dances the pants off a nearly related genre from Brazil called zouk.) I knew I wanted to learn more when I returned home, and I found the stems for this excellent track by my very talented friend in Nashville, Jesse Santoyo, waiting for me in Chicago. Clearly, this song and kizomba were meant for each other.

I didn't have time to remix until March of 2015. Over those three, short months, Jesse's father had passed away, and so did two very dear friends of mine. By that point, my ongoing research on Native American culture began to focus on the sobering reality of missing and murdered indigenous women through the work of artists like Iskwé and activists like Sister Warriors Against Violence. Previously, I had learned of the gut wrenchingly high rate of Native American youth suicide, who are nearly twice as likely as any other race to die before the age of twenty-four with a statistical incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder rivaling the rate of U.S. military veterans returning from Afghanistan. This dimension of the ramifications of perpetuated, genocidal colonialism for my Native brothers and sisters sunk into my heart in a way it never had previously as I fought through the raw grief of the two friends I had just lost, the old and familiar pain that raised from all the others I had lost before, and my own loneliness as a single man with fewer ones left I truly love.

And so I'm offering this track not only in memoriam of those that all of us have lost. I'm offering this remix also as a single ray of light amidst a flood of darkness threatening to shroud completely those of us who remain behind. I can only spell this out in sounds; so, I'll rely on Jesse for the words: "Someday, we will be together for always. It will be just you and me alone. And the days will never end, our hearts set sail again to that place we dreamed that we would always be."

Just Jacob - Future Bachata Fall 2016 Live DJ Mix

Last week I went to the only live concert I really, really wanted to see this year: Madeon vs. Porter Robinson at the Aragon Ballroom during their Shelter 2016 tour. So, I stayed up all night after a DJ meet and greet making this mix based on the catalogs of those two artists, plus similar tracks by people with whom they've collaborated over the years, e.g. Knife Party, Kaskade, Dillon Francis, Skrillex, Yelle, Mat Zo, and more. For some crazy reason, I always have a hard time finding people to go to dope stuff like this with me; so, I'm dedicating this mix to my friends, Jordan Sexton, Jesse Sexton, Myla Ostroshenko, and Sophie Mann who were kick butt enough to join the fun this time around. The good people at Dred Collective gave me their permission to share my edit of one of my favorite frenesi remixes from Machine Girl's incredible 2014 album, "WLFGRL." My goal with this edit was to take the core of the track "覆面調査員" [Japense: "cover surveyor"] that had already been translated from the genre of footwork (by Machine Girl) to the genre of gabber trap (by frenesi) over to something in the general vicinity of danceable zouk with future bass production plays. This is the darkest track on this project based on stories from some of the darkest times in my life and that of my friends. Without sharing too much personal detail, there was a period where for some reason, a bunch of people I'm very close to all experienced infidelity in their relationships. Some were cheated on by their spouses or significant others; some were were physically or emotionally abused. One of the things I really love about music is its ability to translate pain into an artistic expression that lends strength to people going through pain. I searched for a Native American legend that developed this theme and found a pair of stories from the Blackfoot tribe that served as different perspectives on this same dynamic, "The Lost Woman" and "The Bad Wife." 04 Just Jacob - Infidelity (Chase Down The Dawn)

I spent a lot sleepless nights during a dark time in my life that I mention in the liner notes to the 4th track on this album. To cope, I streamed public domain audiobooks, and that's how I discovered the work of the Lakota activist and educator, Zitkala-Sa, with her telling of the story "The Badger & The Bear." "The Badger & The Bear" develops the concept of vengeance through the lens of justice. Listening to that story on repeat when I lay awake through the night made me forget about my troubles and reflect on my location in a bigger story. It challenged my tacit acceptance of Native American genocide given my lack of action on behalf of the indigenous community in my city and nation, built over stolen Native American land and centuries of broken trust. This isn't to minimize the injustice that other people have faced. But for me, the ongoing genocide of the Native American community is the foundational injustice upon which the existence of the United States is predicated. None of us chose to be born into this state of injustice, but we still have a responsibility to do something about it. I wrote this song to honor what I learned from Zitkala-Sa, to take responsibility for my ignorance and to begin working towards a new tomorrow in mutual support with my indigenous sisters and brothers. 

Everything in this album is based on this track. The lyrics imagine a Native American interlocutor responding to people and institutions hell bent on the annihilation of the indigenous community that persists to this very day, naming the tactics that have been employed to that end: political power plays, religion, assimilative education, substance abuse baiting, and more. For those of us ignorant of that struggle (as I myself have been), there is a call to recognize and respond to the ongoing story of the indigenous community against these overwhelming odds. To own my position in this story, I included a reference from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, a work often criticized for perpetuating vile, anti-Jewish stereotypes against my own ethnic community. Many of us find ourselves in a state of superposition, existing simultaneously as oppressed and oppressor to varying degrees. My hope is that we will follow a new path forward beyond both, and that is why I created this album.

There are a lot of stories from the Native American community that skilfully develop the topic of betrayal, but the one that has most recently influenced me most comes in two different versions from Blackfoot tribe, "The Lost Woman" and "The Bad Wife." I found that the first version resonated with me more, and it spoke jn a restorative way to some broken parts of a very dark time in my life.
