Just Jimitz: A Sonic Story That Starts in the Heart of Lima

Jimitz was born in Arequipa, Peru — but his story truly begins six months later in Lima’s historic center, where the sounds that would shape his life echoed through colonial streets and into his home.

He lived just two blocks from Palacio de Gobierno, where each day the military band’s marches — the pounding of drums, the clash of cymbals, the tight precision of brass — filled the air. While most kids were outside playing fútbol, Jimitz was mesmerized by those rhythms. He would later join his school’s marching band, not out of discipline, but because something about the pulse of the parade had already embedded itself into his body.

At home, vinyl records spun constantly: a family collection that included everything from The Beatles and Nueva Ola to salsa dura, música criolla, disco, and Michael Jackson. He didn’t choose this music — it was simply there, part of his everyday atmosphere. “I was put to sleep with all kinds of music,” he says. “Maybe that’s why my sound is so dreamy. Or weird,” he jokes.

His introduction to electronic music didn’t come through a festival or flashy party. It came through curiosity and a friend with internet access. They started downloading DJ sets — from Global Underground legends to obscure SoundCloud finds — not as future DJs, but as dancers. Jimitz was always the one who stayed until the last track. He didn’t need to know who the DJ was — just whether the music moved him.

Unlike many DJs, he didn’t study piano or production as a teen. His path was slower, more intuitive. He didn’t feel “ready” for years. But when he finally started playing for others, something clicked. Friends and strangers alike noticed: there was something different in how he built a set — something hypnotic, layered, tribal, progressive, yet personal. “It’s not that I knew what I was doing,” he admits. “I just knew what felt right.”

He plays by instinct — letting the music guide him. “I don’t remember track names well,” he says, “but I remember the feeling. I wait for the moment when the song tells me it wants to be played.”

Today, Jimitz continues to shape his sound, learning production, developing his own tracks, and refining a style that blends genres into one evolving journey. His longest set lasted twelve hours — and he’s looking forward to going even longer.

He hopes that one day, he’ll drop the "Just" from his DJ name — a quiet nod to the respect he’s earned from his peers.
