If you had stopped by the studio when Bye Beneco was recording its debut full-length earlier in 2014, you
would have stumbled on a scene littered with clues about what Space Elephant would eventually sound
like.
Softly sparkling fairy lights. Persian carpeting with a piling so plush you could easily sink into it. A splayed
out traditional Japanese Wagasa umbrella. And, at the heart of it all, a shrine to Mexican artist Frida
Kahlo with a dimly lit world globe as its centerpiece.
It was the perfect setting for the creation of a defiant, South African-hewn flag bearer for music that defies
easy categorisation; for an album that’s at once welcoming and inviting, and explosively experimental
and thrilling.
Those who have been following Bye Beneco since the Johannesburg-based band emerged in 2013
will know that creating a debut album that falls outside simple catch-alls like Indie-Folk or Indie-Pop is
befitting for this musical collective.
Through a growing slate of live performances (including Oppikoppi 2013) and gripping videos (“On
The Line”), Bergen Nielson (drums, guitar), Lenny-Dee Doucha (vocals, guitar), Jenny Dison (vocals,
percussion) and Matthew Watson (drums, percussion, guitar) have emerged as willing to explore sounds
and words without constraint.

Frontman Jeremy de Tolly's voice, combined with the band's gifted musicianship, influenced a generation of young alternative indie musicians. With time to reflect during the global COVID pandemic The Dirty Skirts decided to collaborate remotely to 'test the waters' & instantly rediscovered their mutual creative chemistry & drive to release new music.  

"Blue jean skies started as a sketch paying homage to Amapiano and Aphex Twin’s ambient music. It began with a wash of soft synthesiser and a Gqom / Amapiano hybrid beat, but soon enough, multi-octave vocal lines and lyrics began to pour through. As with other songs on the EP, there’s a juxtaposition here of fragile human relating, with earthly beauty. In this case, it’s a wide open sky, the colour of blue jeans, that provides the theatre in which deeply personal events unfold. It’s a story of falling in love, amidst the struggle of not knowing how to communicate one’s complex inner world. It describes what it’s like when the words won’t come out, one’s body shuts down, becomes numb and frozen, even while falling in love. While writing the bass parts, Passion picked up his fretless, and paid homage to Bakithi Khumalo (Paul Simon) and Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) with some wonderful bass lines. Soon, the question on everybody’s lips will be: “Have You Heard? Have you heard how The Muffinz rule the world?”. The Muffinz have unleashed their mysteriously beautiful world of eclectic soul to the South African public and they are set for world domination.

The music of The Muffinz is so new, yet so soulful, so accessible, so honest and so innocent, that it appeals to all age groups, races, classes and sexes. 

The five young musicians make a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill rappers and house DJs, who are currently dominating the popular music scene, in that they play real instruments, and they play them well. Added to that is all five musicians are great singers in their different genres of expertise.

Take for instance electric guitarist and vocalist, Atomza. His voice is best described as a young Michael Jackson meets Usher with a twist of rock. Drummer Keke then enters with his  Senegalese meets rumba vocals. The band switch from a groovy R&B rhythm led by acoustic guitarist Mthae and bassist Skabz, to a classy jazz guitar sound introduced by electric guitarist and acapella singer, Simz. And that by the way is just on one song!

That is why, to explain the band, they decided to call themselves The Muffinz. Explains Mthae: “We wanted a name that would be remembered, something catchy but a name that people would want to find out more about. Plus, we all come from different backgrounds musically and so we all bring different ingredients - as in the ingredients in a muffin.”
