On October 21st, 2016 around 11:30pm my younger brother John Cassidy Davern was shot and killed in Pittsburgh, PA. He was 19 years old with a 5 month pregnant girlfriend who just 4 months later gave birth to his son. 
When I was 19 our mother was incarcerated along with our grandmother and I took full custody of "C" and raised him. Our mother wasn't released from Federal prison until after he was 18. The bond I shared with him (along with all of my younger siblings) was deep. 
He was killed by someone he had considered a friend, who broke bread, slept and was welcomed into our home. 
We went through a lot of trauma in our childhoods that still impact me to this day but losing him was something that took myself and my family years to recover from mentally and emotionally. I wouldn't even go as far as to say we will ever fully recover from the loss we feel because we will never get our brother back. 
I've contemplated making a song about him for a very long time. Then one day it poured out of me. I hope that wherever his spirit is, he can hear this song and know that his memory is alive and cherished by so many people who loved him and cared about him. 

Long Live C....Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and feel your presence with me.

This song Isn't about encouraging anyone to use substances. Most of us know someone or multiple people personally who have been or are actively addicted to opioids. Instead of not talking about the issue I decided to make a very honest song about it from my perspective. My own father has been an addict for decades and thankfully I learned from his mistakes and never went down that path but I have dabbled with pills myself. We are only human and we make mistakes. Some of those mistakes have cost us the lives of people we cherish. Hopefully, someone in active addiction hears this song and knows that they are not alone even though it may feel that way. They say the first step on the road to recovery is acknowledging that you have an issue in the first place are...a fiend. It's something your pride won't allow you to admit. Society shames it. Laws incriminate you for it, However, it is a reality and my art is a reflection of my reality.
