A golden phonograph record was attached to each of the Voyager spacecraft that were launched almost 48 years ago. One of the purposes was to send a message to extraterrestrials who might find the spacecraft as the spacecraft journeyed through interstellar space. In addition to pictures and music and sounds from earth, greetings in 55 languages were included.

NASA asked Dr Carl Sagan of Cornell University to assemble a greeting and gave him the freedom to choose the format and what would be included. Because of the launch schedule, Sagan (and those he got to help him) was not given a lot of time. Linda Salzman Sagan was given the task of assembling the greetings.

The story behind the creation of the "interstellar message" is chronicled in the book, "Murmurs of Earth", by Carl Sagan, et al. Unfortunately, not much information is given about the individual speakers. Many of the speakers were from Cornell University and the surrounding communities. They were given no instructions on what to say other than that it was to be a greeting to possible extraterrestrials and that it must be brief.

This is second of the four tracks of a new collaboration with my music friend Pete Swinton. I will be re-working some of his tracks from his excellent Butterfly and Ship album.

This is a line from a song by Van Halen, Panama, describing a spectacular vehicle. I think Van Halen's music is exactly about this, exitement, fast, bombastic, wild and extravagant, and deliberately vulgar. Much of it really belongs to the Eighties, both in composition as in sound.
In memory of Eddie Van Halen I am trying to bring this to life in this song, filled with Van Halen-isms.

I hope you can enjoy this tribute and that it will make you think of him and his joyful, loud and exuberant music.

I think of an old 1940's b/w movie, maybe Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, starring Cary Grant and Eve Marie Saint, music by Bernard Herrmann,  a master of this genre!  Rewrite: They meet at an isolated roof top cafe under the moonlight and sit outside listening to romantic love songs from the lounge... staring in each other's eyes under the moonlit sky.  Arm in arm, they walk slowing off the terrace of the cafe, and a helicopter appears, randomly shooting with machine guns at the couple.  They take cover under the terrace.... To be continued.
