Sonic the Hedgehog - Scrap Brain Zone (SPC700)

Yet another composition that was chiselled!

Back when ELORG were handing out the Tetris licences, there was a Sega Mega Drive version of Tetris that ended up being unlicensed after Nintendo won the rights to it (which led to Tetris being published on the Game Boy and NES). However, Sega's Arcade version remained in use in 1989 despite the Mega Drive version being quashed (and subsequently, only a handful of copies exist in the wild), and this is the music that's synonymous with that version of Tetris.

Interestingly, the 8-bit version of Columns uses this music, plus the Sega Tetris panic music, in its variant of Flash Columns, so to us in the West at least, we'd recognise this piece of music as the Flash Columns music.  More recently however, it was remixed for use in Puyo Puyo Tetris, which in my opinion is perhaps the greatest crossover game in recent memory.

19: Staff Roll

This is the 1P VS 2P Mode theme from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, brought up-to-date as if the game was remastered for modern platforms. Originally called Final of Puyo Puyo and used as the fight against Satan (Dark Prince) in Puyo Puyo, this song has been considered a staple and is arguably one of the best battle themes in puzzle games!

This song was my childhood, and I felt that it brought out my best Puyo back when I was competitively playing!

18: 1P VS 2P Mode

This is Brave of Puyo Puyo from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine's sound test, brought up-to-date as if the game was remastered for modern platforms. Like Theme of Puyo Puyo, a faster version of Dr. Robotnik's battle theme, the original victory fanfare, and the Unused Beta Title Theme, these remained buried in the sound test and not featured in the final build of the game.

This is the Stage 13 Encounter theme from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, brought up-to-date as if the game was remastered for modern platforms. Those dopey duncebots couldn't do anything right, therefore Dr. Robotnik has to do his own dirty work and blend those beans!

Using Brave of Puyo Puyo as the basis for this encounter theme adds to the tension, with the arrangement paying homage to Brave whilst retaining its independency from the original.

I know! I'm not dead yet!

Being a father takes time away from everything, but I had this idea that for 2024 I was going to release a compilation album based on Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. This is (in my opinion) the most important Puyo Puyo game alongside Puyo Puyo 2 as without Mean Bean Machine, I'm pretty certain Puyo Puyo wouldn't have had a foundation outside of Japan and East Asia.

17: Exercise Mode

It's been a while since I last uploaded something, so here's some music to fill that void for a period of time.

Here is the Rival Mode music from Puyo Puyo Sun. Some people may recognise this as Draco's Theme in Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary (which in itself used both the Ketteiban and Arcade version transposes). This was rendered using the Sega Megadrive's Yamaha YM2612 FM Synthesiser Chip. All samples used in this rendition follow the 5 FM, 3 PSG and PCM/DAC channel limitations (if you can call it as such), and I had great fun doing this! This is played in the same transpose as found in Puyo Puyo Sun Ketteiban (which is three notes lower than the Arcade transpose).

Puyo Puyo Sun - Rival Mode (YM2612 Version)

It's been quite a while since I last uploaded something onto Soundcloud, so I figured I'd upload something I was working on just out of boredom. Where I've been recently killing time playing Puyo Puyo Tetris, I remembered just how good The Top Floor theme from Puyo Puyo 2 (also known as Final of Puyo Puyo 2) sounded, so I decided to go back and recreate the Super Puyo Puyo 2 version of the song, putting a Famicom/NES spin on it.

For this mix I've used the VRC6 and MMC5 memory banks to create additional channels, including some FM-sounding ones, and the additional FDS channel to further create some sound. With PCM sampling to allow higher quality drums, and a pseudo-echo to give the Noise channel some extra bite, I must admit I did quite enjoy this rendition.

Puyo Puyo 2: The Top Floor (VRC6/MMC5/FDS)

A little rendition I had sequenced around two years ago. I got bored and decided to knock this one up. The second part of the song contains the Sax melody from the Night Time arrangement.

Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum - Jubilife City

Another quick knock-up back in 2010, this time from Eterna Forest, found in the 4th Generation of Pokémon Games (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum). It was actually a rather simple melody to run with, and I guess within its simplicity lies its beauty.

Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum - Eterna Forest

Here's an interesting idea. Make a classic and memorable music sound even more retro, but keep it somewhat modern enough to capture the feel of a tribute arrangement. This rendition ticks all three boxes, at least, in my humble opinion it does. Feel free to disagree if you want to.

What I did was take the percussion dialogue as best as I could from the Mario Kart 7 arrangement of Rainbow Road, but render it using the RP2A07 sound chip (NES/Famicom APU) to bring out this classic. I'm sure the nightmares of the original circuit come back to haunt those not particularly good at it, and at the same time, those that found this circuit memorable get the same hit of nostalgia.

Super Mario Kart - Rainbow Road (RP2A07 Mix)

Nothing special really. I just got bored and decided to mix two completely different sound chips together based on an original Y2403 rendition from a game released on the PC-98, Madou Monogatari ARS. I much preferred Schezo's opening theme to Arle's and Rulue's, so I did his. The FM Percussion and two PSG-esque Square Waves came from an OPL-2 sound chip, whereas the Triangle Wave Bass coupled with two further Square Waves came from the RP2A07 APU. I must admit, I don't know what I was doing with the Percussion! It does sound erratic, yet strangely it fits the tune. *shrugs*

Madou Monogatari ARS - Schezo (OPL-2/RP2A07)

After releasing NESify a week or so ago, someone had asked me if it would be possible to sequence music using samples from the Super Nintendo's SPC700 audio processor chip. Suffice to say that it is possible, but strangely, only having eight channels to use makes it challenging. While you have five base channels with the NES's RP2A07 sound chip (including PCM), various extensions (such as the N106, or VRC7) allow you to use extra channels, thus increasing the capacity from five to a maximum of 14 (VRC7 for example includes three extra pulse square/sawtooth channels and six YM2403 FM channels). With the SPC700, you're stuck with just eight!

Having said that, here is a demo of how you can use all of the SPC700's channels to recreate what I would call a modern classic. Hope you all enjoy this little mock-up.

Pokémon Black and White - Nuvema Town (SPC700)

While I'm not a huge fan of Final Fantasy XIII or indeed XIII-2, this song in particular really resonated with me. The game hasn't been out for too long here in Europe either, but after listening to this song enough times, I was able to get it down following the exact limitations of the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip, which is found inside the Sega Megadrive. While I have done other YM2612 arrangements before, this one is by far my favourite. Enjoy~
