Today sees one of London’s most exciting new talents, ABSOLUTE. (aka Anthony McGinley) announce his debut mixtape Wonderland, due for release on May 7th via Skint Records/BMG. Alongside the announcement, tickets for ABSOLUTE.’s headline show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on Saturday 19th June are on sale now.

Wonderland is a whirlwind ride through dance music as heard through ABSOLUTE.’s ears: emotive house, hard-edged techno, divine disco, and euphoric rave bring the party, while more cerebral downtempo and textural ambient tracks wind things down. It’s party music for a time without parties, all shot through with McGinley’s message of hope and equality for all.  
 
Speaking on the Mixtape, ABSOLUTE. explains: “Writing this album brought me back to life, I was writing music that helped me feel certain ways, freedom and connectedness to something I and many others were missing, longing hard to be around people, or needing a dose of raw euphoric rave energy which gave some release at the sheer desperation to dance and feel joy. Even if just for a short time, to feel transported to 90’s UK raves or New York’s underground gave me some life, and I hope it does for you too. Welcome to Wonderland…” 
 
The mixtape album came to fruition as a result of the recent lockdown where ABSOLUTE., and the rest of the world, was forced to a standstill. Anthony was determined to turn his frustration into art and participated in a creative workshop that helped open his mind to new ideas, taking his music in exciting directions. The title of the mixtape takes its name from Wonderland Arena, a now obsolete rave space in East London that played host to live performances from the likes of Frankie Knuckles, The Prodigy, and Carl Cox during the halcyon days of acid house and early rave, and that is now converted into apartments where Anthony currently lives and works. 
 
ABSOLUTE. Is a project that has steadily gained momentum over the last couple of years, deftly choosing the right path for long term success rather than quick gains. Coming from the vibrant LGBTQ+ club and rave space where he promoted influential events in London, Anthony wanted to make sure foundations were solid before making the break into the live arena with this incredible body of work. He’s DJed at a wide array of parties and festivals from Glastonbury and Creamfields to Fabric and Razzmatazz but performing live has always been the goal. As lockdown came into effect he was packing his equipment to go on the road supporting dance legends 808 State on a 10 date UK tour.  
 
Despite a total shutdown of the live sector during the pandemic, Anthony still managed to perform his debut live set for Radio 1’s virtual Ibiza weekend during the summer and has just announced a headline live show at Islington’s assembly for March next year in partnership with underground gatekeepers Percolate. 
 
Alongside his musical accomplishments, Anthony is a passionate activist for human rights and has a longstanding track record of work supporting issues including climate, race, and LGBTQ+ justice. After attending the first Extinction Rebellion action in London, McGinley wrote “Rave Against the Machine”, a track that sampled a speech by Greta Thunberg which resulted in XR later inviting him to programme the music line-up of their International Rebellion at Trafalgar Square, while at Glastonbury, he played at Greenpeace’s Rave Tree.

UK-based Australian Light Year’s last record ’Never Know’ on Exploited had ’strains of chill wave and witch house, with looped, distant vocal snippets and a breezy vibe. Since his release on Spectral Sound the former electro house producer was saying hello to L.I.E.S, Trilogy Tapes and more straightforward house and techno.’ (Resident Advisor) 
While his first releases were leaning on the more melodic side ’Feeling This Way’ (his follow-up on Exploited) is more functional and stripped down just to the bare essentials - a drum track and a vocal snippet - pretty much influenced by some of the Ghetto House records he was listening to when he did this track. ’Slow Burn’ on the other hand is a collaboration with Jas Shaw from Simian Mobile Disco. Jas had just sourced some new pieces of kit for the SMD live album concept they were working on. They used a Cirklin sequencer - one of the most intuitive analogue sequencers you could probably use. The track pretty much wrote itself once they sequenced their modular synthesizer. The final version was created, produced and mixed in that one session. We hope you enjoy these 2 infectious tracks as much as we do.

It’s time to pack up the car and our daredevil is excited for the final of his many “Road Trips” across the vast continent. He throws on the booming stereo in the auto, while nodding his head to the reverberating and lengthy bass under the scattered layers of a somehow dark, but uplifting organ progression. The open road is his muse on his journey to the ocean.

The waves are rolling in on this crisp summer day in Cape Town and he feels confident. “Boom clap boom clap boom clap” is what he hears from the strong current striking against the rocks on the shoreline. He feels the persistent rhythm of the South Atlantic Ocean as he paddles out under the sinking sun. The warrior mounts the first swell perfectly and utters a subconscious, yet triumphant “Uh” as he descends from the peak. 

The sun begins to reach the horizon and the colors of the sky bounce and refract through the water, giving the scene an almost psychedelic feel. The seagulls click through the water searching for prey and they create scattered synths and sonorous cymbals from under the water. This whole day is really starting to get “Kinda Wavy.”

If you’ve followed Dirtybird for a while, then you’re surely aware of Sacha Robotti. He’s graced the label several times the past 5 years, but often with a collaborator-Kill Frenzy, Kevin Knapp, Justin Jay, Look Like, etc. 

“Melato Nina” is Sacha’s first solo EP with us and both tracks are filled with emotion, appropriately so. The title track continuously builds around the haunting synth melody and the subdued vocals of Tauon, while the melodic “Low Key Goddess” contrasts the extremes of light & dark sounds to culminate in two brilliant pieces of music.

As always I did my best work on this project, so I'd love to explain to you what I actually did:

First I started with the melody. I love the original one so I didnt want to change it and only added the Una Corda, which is my piano of choice in almost every production due to its fine and warm sound it delivers with its single string mechanics. Great to have it.

Another important thing to mention is the first verse. I wanted to give it as much tension as possible to prepare the listener for the genre. At the same time I tried to give Vera's voice the harmonic backing it deserves. The result is a warm ensemble and those bass dominated vocal effects every fourth bar. 

Near the end of the verse I added parts of the drums. I thought that's an important step. Otherwise the transition to the drop probably would have been to hard. Without it nobody would expect a four on the floor beat in the drop. And I dont like my listeners to be too confused... ;)

Next step was to DROP THE BASS.
So the main contents are actually just the drums, the bass and the additional vocal I've added saying "rushing back". The goal was to give the listener a dry and pumping experience in transition to the warm and rich verses. The idea behind the "rushing back" vocals was to have a huge transition between the connection to Flume's original song and my remix. The additional vocal instantly changes the mood of the song. 

So, that's it. Remix is finished and I hope you guys like it!
