PHONK

In 1887 when he was 21, and before before his famous Gymnopodies and Gnossiennes had been completed, Erik Satie composed this first Sarabande as one of three he wrote for piano. At the time he was an impoverished conservatory dropout making his living as a piano player in bohemian taverns and cabarets like Le Chat Noir. The Sarabandes were not published until 1911 with the support of Ravel who also introduced and performed the second Sarabande in concert in 1911. Satie's sometime friend Debussy wrote orchestral arrangements of the piano Gymnopodies in 1897 and conducted them to Satie's great acclaim in 1911 in Paris. Here Berkeley composer Guillaume Pearson has written a lovely orchestral arrangement to accompany my two guitar version of Satie's 1st Sarabande. Hope you enjoy the quiet mystery and captivating harmony that attracted me.

Fractured

Free style composed after talking to a friend who was heartbroken. Listening to it years later, I was inspired by the thought of loneliness it evoked, and I just have this mental picture of being marooned on a distant plant, able to survive, but knowing I would never make it back. 

Marooned

Just a short composition that always evoked the feeling of remembering someone who was no longer in your life.

Remebering You

This track is a composition in 3 parts and revolves around the a favorite dream of mine, being able to fly. Part 1 - Free Fall, Part 2 - Finding Your Wings, PArt 3 - Ignition!

Learning to Fly

This short composition was inspired by one of the most iconic parks in this country, Central Park. To me it represents an island of natural beauty in a sea of population. I was inspired by the thoughts of quiet solitude, a walk in the park on a clear afternoon.

So the Sax has always been one of my most favorite solo instruments to listen to (other than the piano!) and I wanted to challenge myself and see if I could compose a piece using only Sax voices. What came out of that was this piece which is inspired by the following. Imagine evening in New York, dark, rainy , dirty , noisy, crowded and a street musician (Sax player) on the street, competing with the City to be heard. As the song progresses, night carries on, the city empties out, the noise is replaced with only our lonely street musician, playing for everyone, and no one at all, until finally, as the sun comes up on a new day, the city cleaned from sound and filth by the rain, and we see the beauty that was there all along, just hidden.

I started playing piano at about 7. Took lessons for about 5 years (though not classically trained) and then quit because I would rather play outside with my friends, what a mistake! When I got older and fell in love with classical piano, I realized I missed my chance to build the required form, dexterity and control to be able to play the true classical masterpieces. However, I still love classical piano and this was my attempt to compose more of a classical style piece.
