Difficult situations like the one shown in this scene are not present in traditional media, and our song reflects that.

Hill: Part 1 - The first part of the track represents the eagerness and need with which Kubo runs home to his mother. The audience does not yet know of Kubo’s mother’s situation, and Kubo doesn’t show it, either. As such, the instrumental is bright and happy.

Dusk: Part 2 - The second part of the track represents Kubo’s mother and her wonderful stories of adventure and battle. We see why Kubo loves his mother so much, but towards the end of her story, things start to slip. This is reflected in the decrescendoing transition to the last part.

Moonlight: Part 3 - We now understand Kubo’s trauma and the unfortunate situation he is in. The somber yet comforting melody reflects how Kubo feels - he loves his mother and cares for her - but must also face the hardship of watching her suffer. 

The structure and instrumentation of this song reflect the corresponding parts of the scene that reveal Kubo’s trauma.
