You can hire amaaaazing people that aren’t right.  That doesn’t mean that they are bad. They are amaaazing but they are not right for you.  And you can hire these people and they will.. it will become soooo toxic not because they are bad not because you are bad (even though you’ll both end up thinking each other are bad) but because they are wrong.. They are wrong for you. It’s just like if you’re dating someone who is just wrong. Personalities, approaches to lifestyles, approaches to career paths and goals and what people want to accomplish in the world. If all of those things are wrong it doesn’t matter how great the person is the environment is going to become toxic.

And I was always of the opinion that I could pull someone off the street and that I could infuse them with the excitement of what a startup is and how exciting it could be to change healthcare and change the world and that they would completely change and morph into what I need from a team member.

And in the past I would spend yearrrss, yearsss on people and invest yearrrs of salaries, and 401ks, and benefits, and housing into these people thinking that would change them and make them what I needed them to be to have a cohesive work environment.  And it doesn’t and it won’t.

Find the right people.

That doesn’t mean find the best people.

Find the right people for you and your mission.
