I can't stand it anymore. I haven't felt this hot since I was a hormonal teenager and there is a very annoying itch around my navel. I dab my sweat-beaded forehead with my sleeve. The guy sitting two rows ahead is so close to his phone screen that it seems like he can’t look away. I glance at the remaining two passengers in the carriage. They seem almost asleep, with their heads resting against the window. On a late Tuesday night, a few of us are left on the last train. Home is still far, and I look down at my belly, noticing a halo of sweat on the shirt right above the point that itches the most: I absolutely need to figure out what's happening. I glance up, check on my fellow travelers, and discreetly lift my shirt, thinking something dirty got stuck under it. But no. What once was my belly button has now turned into an actual hole. Moist and soft, it is surrounded by two small protective lips that meet at the top in a lump of dark pink skin. Shocked, I quickly lower my shirt and in doing so I clumsily touch the newborn clitoris, releasing an instant surge of satisfaction in the area that was torturing me so much. I need air. Heading towards the train doors I eventually notice: the guy two rows away isn't staring at the phone, his face is glued to it. His chin has grotesquely elongated and has become one with the base of the phone, lips, eyelids, and irises have merged into the screen. No trace of a nose. An original distinction between the human and the object is still visible, with filaments of flesh intertwining with luminous lines of pixels, but by now the substance is inseparable. Terrified, I check the other passengers: both are in the same condition, curved on a

 phone that has become them, eternally holding their hand on their faces. I scream: immovable, they completely ignore me. The train continues its journey. It has skipped all the stations. The world outside is shrouded in darkness. The bump of my heart echoes in my ears as I am devoured by the heat. I approach the window, reveal my belly and observe my abominable reflection. I move my hand to caress this new vulva, feeling instant relief. Like a witch from the past, I search in the mirrored glass for those monsters who have searched too much in their screens: plunging two fingers into my mutation, I gasp. They have missed the pleasure of this reality, but I won't resist succumbing to it.

Inspired by the Richard Brautigan poem, Midwife’s curated playlists explore the idea of “a cybernetic ecology;” acoustic and electronic sources reflect on our humanity as well as our animalistic nature in the context of a digital landscape.
