Luis Manuel Garcia–Mispireta joined Gravity's event in Prague in January 2024 to talk about his research and read excerpts from his latest book – Together, Somehow: Music, Affect, and Intimacy on the Dancefloor.

The book examines how people find ways to get along and share a dancefloor. Drawing on years of field research the author explains this bonding in terms of what he calls stranger-intimacy: the kind of warmth, sharing, and vulnerability between people on the dancefloor most of us experienced.

Luis Manuel Garcia-Mispireta is a scholar, curator, and practitioner of popular electronic music, using practice-led ethnographic methods. Luis is also a DJ and member of Berlin’s Room 4 Resistance collective.

Kay Slater (CDVR) is a graduate student in the department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago, writing their master's thesis on deepfake videos and the ways in which new media technologies come to affect communicative discourses of belonging, difference, and desire. They are also writing a chapter on the imagined boundaries between ‘alt’ and straight TikTok, for a volume on digital queer activism forthcoming for Routledge UK. DJing as CDVR (pronounced cadaver), Kay has played at venues like Smartbar Chicago and The Hideout, as well as released mixes for Daisychain, WNUR, JEROME, and Central Air Radio.

From the jump, the mix opens with a poignant quote layered over a progressive techno beat. It's a wild ride of sound exploration, a glitchy mix of break-beat, techno, and house elements. Five minutes in and we're longing for the club and a powerful sound system. A very dancey mix all the way through, it'll have you grooving in your living room like its Saturday night (pre-Covid).
