Moonlight Dancer is an album inspired by the breakbeats and basslines of the late 90s and early 00s that were omnipresent in those early PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 era games. It feels like the world has changed so much since then. Back then multiplayer meant sitting shoulder to shoulder on a couch in your friend's house playing split screen games. Most households still had dial up and when you did get online you found yourself in a digital jungle created and curated by other users. If you wanted to rent a movie you drove down to the nearest rental store and picked up a VHS or a DVD for the weekend! Streaming and algorithms weren't what they are today. The early 00s felt like the best of both worlds with messy socials and under-developed streaming without the endless feeds. 

Thinking back on that era feels a little like driving past an old boarded up video rental store. There's a beautiful sadness in seeing something so special fade and be replaced with something else. I'm hope kids today will have the same feelings about the time when they grew up.

Darkly Dreaming is a new drum and bass EP that delves deep into the liminal space between dreams and memory. Across a total of four tracks and through swirling textures, broken rhythms, and shadowy atmospheres I try to paint a picture of longing and loss where nostalgia stings, dreams hurt and memories are distorted. It’s a sonic diary from the edge of sleep, focused on dreams, nightmares and memories - the ones we chase, remember, and sometimes wish we could forget.

Introspection

It was great working on this track and Ghosts of Paraguay is a seriously sick producer.

The apes have escaped!

Ape Escape is a retro PlayStation game that still holds up if you can survive the awkward controls. If you're into early 2000s gaming or enjoy a solid PlayStation drum and bass soundtrack you should give it a shot. 

The gist of the game is pretty simple: a bunch of monkeys get super smart thanks to some mind-control helmets and they start messing with time. You play as a kid named Spike who has to use his arsenal of sci fi gadgets to catch them.

It was the first game where you needed to use both analogue sticks on the PS1 controller I think. It's crazy to think about now as we all take that for granted. One stick moves you around, and the other swings the net you use to catch monkeys. It was crazy fun playing this back then with friends.

It aged pretty well in my opinion, chunky graphics, weird sci-fi, bright colours, and an absolutely wild soundtrack for its time that sounds like some sorta crazy house jungle hybrid that just went off the rails.

It's one of those games that just looks and feels like it came from an era where the rules were a little looser and game design was a little more unhinged, in a good way. 

The game and it's soundtrack are something special and I made this as a small homage to that game.

I've never been to Johannesburg but I imagine it sounds something like this. I'm playing dice with fate naming a track after a city whose name I can barely spell.

This track is inspired by Ecco the Dolphin. It's not the first track I've written inspired by this game, "how high in the sky can you fly?" is a track I wrote for my Darkly Dreaming EP which is a direct quote from the game. 

The game is a surreal experience. It debuted on the Sega Genesis in 1992 if I recall correctly. On the surface, it's a cute game about a dolphin exploring the ocean but underneath, it's something much stranger and more haunting.

You play as Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin who is suddenly separated from his pod by a mysterious weather event. As you search for your missing family, the game slowly unfolds into a darker sci-fi narrative invoking time travel and cruel and mysterious alien invaders. What begins as a serene underwater adventure turns into an eerie and sometimes unsettling odyssey through the deep sea and beyond.

Every night I found her at the edge of the lake in the dream that wasn’t a dream. The moon, pale and strange, always hanging in the sky, casting its unnatural glow over everything. It lingered in the quiet like a distant god, observing everything. I couldn’t remember when I realized it, but I knew. It was there for me.

She stood by the water, an apparition, her figure blurred. I should have known her. There was something in the way she moved, something that whispered to me that I had met her before. But I didn’t remember.
The lake’s surface was unnaturally still, rippling only where the light of the moon touched.

“You’re here,” she said, "don't you remember the dream?" The moon seemed to hum in response.

I stared at her, trying to place her, trying to pull her into something familiar. But the harder I tried, the further away she seemed. There was something in her eyes, something that tugged at me, like a song I used to know but couldn’t remember the lyrics to.

“Do I know you?” I asked.

She tilted her head, her eyes soft with something like sadness. "You’ve always known me," she said. But how? Where? The words danced around me like mist.

"How do I leave this place?" I pleaded.

"Leave? You can't leave, you know that already, maybe you've forgotten that too."

The moon pulsed, as if it had taken notice.

"You’re not real," I whispered to myself, but the words felt wrong. The moon shone brighter for a moment, a pulse of light, like it was correcting me.
She turned toward the lake, her silhouette stretching, merging with the water. And that’s when I saw it.

"Look," she said. "The truth is beneath."

I felt the pull of the lake.

I stepped forward, closer to the lake, closer to the rippling reflection. The water was calm, but beneath the surface, I could see it. A place where the truth waited. I didn’t understand how, but I knew it was a place I had been before. A place the moon had been before, too.

"You’ve forgotten," she whispered. Her voice faded as if she was being pulled away. "But the moon remembers."

The cold water enveloped me, the world around me becoming dark and muffled. I sank, deeper and deeper, but the moon’s light followed me, clinging to me like a second skin.

I opened my eyes beneath the water, and the memories came rushing back in fragments. Faces blurred, names lost, a life I couldn’t place, all tangled together in the silence of the lake.

And then, through the murk, I saw her again, for the first time. No longer an apparition. She was standing in the water, but she wasn’t just part of the reflection anymore. She was real. Her face was clearer now, her smile familiar. And in that moment, I remembered.

She was someone I had once known. Someone I had abandoned or forgotten. A part of me that had slipped away long ago, but the moon had kept it alive, in the dark waters, waiting for me to find it again. And when I reached out to touch her, the water enveloped me completely, as though it were no longer water, but memory itself.

And then she was gone, just another ripple in the water, but the moon still watched. It would never stop watching and the lake would never stop holding me. Then I woke up and dreamed the dream that wasn’t a dream again.

Subaru's Weakness

This song started as an experiment in redesigning some of the sounds from graphical user interfaces which appeared in the movie The Fifth Element and the probably more well known 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie. From there it evolved into something more and became, "After the Rain."

Have you ever stood on a balcony, or by a cliff's edge, looked over the edge and unexpectedly thought, "If I wanted to, I could just jump?" 

The feeling is known as the "call of the void" or "l'appel du vide" in French. It's more common than you might think and isn't always associated with suicidal ideation. The Return

Kaiori Breathe is a Belfast based electronic musician. His releases, 'Sketches In Colour' (2011) and 'Kokoro' (2013), with Loodma Recordings provided a novel take on dubstep focusing on emotive melodies with complex percussive patterns and a signature foley sound. 

After a substantial break from music production Kaiori Breathe returned in 2025 with 'Darkly Dreaming' a release which marked a departure from that signature sound focusing on gloomy atmospheres, haunting melodies and an intense percussive sound.
