If STRGTHS offered a taste of the Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH’s sense of humour and willingness to actively resist order, Linear S Decoded see them in full control. 

The complex, onomatopoeic track titles are gone and replaced with more recognisable words and expressions, as though the pair - having strayed dangerously close to parody have decided to reign it in, declaring we make the rules round here. 

And they do. 

Whilst many of the textures on the album can be cross checked against celebrated European Techno of yore, it’s the unapologetic nature of SHXCXCHCXSH’s composition that marks it out against the rest. And it’s a development - where STRNGTHS might have opted for simply another cavernous kick drum, there are hooks here (see This Hmming Raverie), and bonafide musical pieces (see Monolithic Conclusion). Where others might feel ashamed that such uplifting and tonally pleasing sounds are coming out of their machines - SHXCXCHCXSH revel in this fact, warping and bending these sounds unashamedly to craft a truly singular Techno album.

There was a time when to die was something slightly different from what it is today. Back in the last days of the middle age, some hidden monk was concerned about how to die properly, according to the catholic standards of that era, so he wrote a book that was a cornerstone in that period.

This has been the leitmotiv and inspiration in the concept that drives this album, the "Ars Moriendi" book from 1415, a book that gave some clues about how to die properly, avoiding lack of faith, despair, impatience, avarice or spiritual pride, all those actually track titles in this compendium.

Premiere: P.E.A.R.L. - Lack Of Faith [Falling Ethics]

Oliver Deutschmann, who operates the Berlin-based Vidab label along with Stephan Hill, specializes in what he calls “timeless” club music – while it’s a term that initially seems like it could apply to anything and everything, a quick survey of Deutschmann’s work makes it readily apparent what he means. His hard-edged beats, insistent tones, and occasional flash of devious humor make Deutschmann a natural addition to the Mote Evolver roster: his natural versatility and clear-minded futurism result in compelling club tracks and DJ nights, and his Mote Evolver debut EP Lost In A  Loop is no exception to this rule. With just a simple schematic to work with, Deutschmann does what the best producers do and enlivens those simple instructions until they give an illusion of greater complexity.

Deutschmann’s deft usage of split-second samples on the opening track “Seduced” turns a distant, repeated murmur of the track title into an inescapable command, while a dense undergrowth of acid bassline makes it clear there’s no turning back. The interlude “Apsurt” follows with lofty, faintly ominous synth pads providing the backing to a glass elevator ride to the top of a skyscraper utopia, all while a reassuring monologue on neurology points towards a future of human connectivity. The tension between the dark-tinted instrumentation and these utopian pronouncements is a classic techno trope that Duetschmann employs to great effect.

On the b-side, “Survive” plays out very much like the more intense and anxious twin of “Seduced,” again relying on the repeitition of a single reverberating word to set the tone, while the hammering drum patterns fill in the details. The closer “Lost” dispenses with the vocalisations completely and lets the steaming mechanical processes take center stage: the stripped-down symbiosis of body and brain that this track achieves is very rperesnetative of Deutschmann’s work overall.

Prolific Italian producer Kaiser makes his long awaited debut on Soma with a perfectly executed 4 track EP, The Way Back. Having been present on the scene through releases with Planet Rhythm, Animal Farm and more recently his own K S R imprint, Kaiser's style is a mixture of abrasive, hypnotic Techno blended with element of minimalism, glued together with a solid amount of groove. 

Title track The Way Back reminisces to Birmingham-era UK Techno with it’s thundering rhythms and twisted synth hook. Tales Of The Future takes things on a more futuristic tip as spacial polyrhythms build the structure of this very functional track. Ramping up the pace a little more, Loud Cries builds incessantly as impulsive percussion drives this perfectly crafted tool. Clubbed to Death finishes off this Soma debut EP from Kaiser with a speedy broken beat as atonal pads and drones create a densely packed, atmospheric and climactic track.
