Following a cracking launch EP that showcase their carefully-selected, finely-tuned roster in all it’s glory, exciting UKG startup Steppers Club return with their next celebrated, vintage tinge of nu-skool Garage hedonism. That first acclaimed VA offering, entitled First Steps, which featured label stalwarts Sensa, Oppidan, Minista, Sam Deeley and head-honcho Zefer, saw a metric tonne of support from across the underground, with premieres from us here at On The Wax, a track host from our friends over at The 3000 Network, an exclusive Instagram interview and feature with the guys over at Bass Hive and an in-depth appearance on Meltout Crew’s Reprezent Radio show. All in all, a stellar, groove-infused showing from an incredibly solid, norm-defying platform that’s still very much in its infancy.

Now, and epitomising everything we love about the current UKG revival, label boss Zefer presents his debut 2-tracker, returning to the fold after a slew of sick recent releases, the most recent of which was the locked, stocked and smoking ‘Praise Ya’ drop on Beastwang, who they themselves have overwhelmingly cemented their stance as a real platform to watch, serving up seriously special cuts from the likes of Champion, MPH, Tenshu, Earthnut, Kobe JT, Higgo, Zero and plenty more. 

As its basis, this new 2-track offering from the Steppers Club bossman is uplifting, inherently joyful, sunshine-etched and positively teeming with refined musicality, all facets we instantly look for from both artist and label. Wonderfully adept at working with both original vocalists and carefully-selected, pinpoint samples, the first track sees Zefer utilise the simply gorgeous, velvet vocals of Charlotte Meldrum on ‘Let Me Know’, a 4x4 NUKG lick that provides a sharp glance in that vintage back-mirror, whilst also hammering down that modern aesthetic. It’s stunning writing all round, from both Zefer and Meldrum, with all that flittering, patterned instrumentation providing a gleeful backdrop for the vocals to go to town on.  Has UKG ever sounded so good?

The B-side, ‘Sugar N’ Spice’, is slightly more dancefloor-focused, but it still retains every bit of rhythm, artistic prowess and gilded marksmanship of the aforementioned first track, and we’re delighted to be exclusively hosting it here at OTW. Whereas Meldrum’s vocal hooks take centre-stage on ‘Let Me Know’, Zefer’s keen ear for sampling allows his mesmerising production to full roll out here, experimenting with a plethora of instruments and percs, showcasing his funky aptitude in all its glory. Overall, another stellar showing from both Steppers Club and Zefer - long may it continue.
