Ronce - The Devil Sleeps In My Stomach

Four years since the release of the Groove, for which responsible were exclusively female producers, the outlines label is presentingthe last cassette finishingthe series and concluding this publishing chapter. The first two cassettes featured an Argentinian sound artist, Aylu, („groove 4”) and a German vocalist producer and activist, AGF, („groove 5”). „groove 6” belongs to one of the most important characters of Chicago Footwork, Jana Rush. This young producer and DJ proved to be an extremely active artist DJ-ing her first sets alongside DJ Rashad, Gant-Man and Nehpets only to co-release, at the age of thirteen, a vinyl with DJ Deeon (Dance Mania label). Two years later she releases another twelve-inch, this time for Contaminated Muzik. For Jana Rush’ next official release we had to wait until 2016.

„groove 6” is being released a few months after the artist's excellent album „Painful Enlightenment” (Planet Mu), which is anaudio documentation of a difficult and dark time in Jana's life. Since„groove 6” was created around the same time, it can be treated as the bright reverse side of the heavy and dense atmosphere of Jane Rush's album.

The A-side tracks of the outlines release are filled with intense and overwhelming physicality. They almost seem like an affirmation of corporeality as opposed to the disturbing and uncomfortable momentsfrom „Painful Enlightenment” („G-Spot”or „Suicidal Ideation”). „Fingering Ur Girl”, „Furious Feet” or „Eros” present the body, movement and physicality in a network of associations referring to the energy of libido, dance or music production. Their sonic intensity also points to the source of Jana Rush's music – footwork battles and competing dancers' moves. This is perfectly complemented by the raw and minimalist track „Off Him” recorded by Jana Rush together with DJ Rashad. The B-side, on the other hand, comprises tracks exploring various forms of rhythmic abstraction. „MY RZ-1” bears resemblance tothe music of the Raster-Noton label. „WTF Iz Goin'On ”and „90's Acid” bounce into the listener's ears with a simple sound theme embedded in a rushing beat. The finale, „Simple", turns out to be a perverse play on the footwork convention with theuse of 105BPM tempo.

The „groove 6” cassette is a testimony to the extraordinary creativity of the Chicago producer. Her work stems from the musical roots of the Windy City such as ghetto house and footwork, but her music goes much further ahead – being in constant motion and transformation, it eludes any precise definition. This striking version of Jana Rush's footwork seems to exceed its stylistic limitations, thus, reaching previously unknown lands.

HforSpirit - 'UnTyMe (OST)'

UnTyMe is an observational folk-anti-horror which challenges stereotypes around ancient pagan beliefs and their links to the occult - exploring their increasing relevance today.

Their pilgrimage to the post-industrial landmark and infamous “rave cave” of the ‘90s Skull Quarry, invites a ritual rebirth and a reunion with nature. It responds to the collective “crisis of meaning” amplified during lockdown in the UK, as observed by first time filmmakers, musician HforSpirit and photographer Nick Hadfield.

Existing in the grey area between documentary and fiction, UnTyMe emerges from a body of research instigated by the filmmakers and carried out by a group of multi-disciplinary artists featured in the film. An exploration of stories, symbols and devotional song & dance connected to Anglo-Celtic folklore lays the path for a participatory film where the line between performance and reality is blurred. Spurred on by the prospect of filming a road trip to escape the increasingly banal reality closing in, the group undergo an unhinged awakening amongst the relics of rural rave culture.

The music composed by HforSpirit (DAIS, Northern Electronics, Ecstatic) juxtaposes industrial sound design with shamanic drums and folk songs exploring collective identity in the time of Covid.  

Toothgrinder Press are excited to release the Original Soundtrack to the UnTyMe project, as well as an accompanying physical ensemble consisting of a Vinyl, Zine, Bag and Cast Hairpin, all artefacts embodying the different aspects of the project.

Seasonal Sounds is a seasonal programme which aims to do a sonic interpretation of the current (and coming) season - both in terms of pace, seasonal events and its characteristics. It combines a variety of musical genres, sonic textures and field recordings in a mix for the season.

Seasonal Sounds #5 marks the beginning of a new year of Seasonal Sounds. This time the season of winter has gotten colder, harsher and more disturbing since we visited it last year. The environment surrounding us cries for attention - howling as it insists on us to face it. I hope we collectively listen to what it has to say, and understand its good intentions for its call to action. Maybe if we listen closely enough, portals of alternative magical worlds will show themselves in the gloomy landscape. WINTER.

Seasonal Sounds #5: Winter

The 38th release of katharsis and our final release of 2023 is the prodigious compilation "Embracing Darkness, Absorbing Light" featuring a vast array of artist beloved by the label. Throughout the grandiose line-up of the 36 tracks, the listener is absorbed by various differing interpretations of the theme outlined in the title of the album. Some of the invited artist went full into introverted progressions and meditative sounds, while others focused on aggressive rhythms or anthemic melodies. But even though the styles and techniques of the songs differ from each other, the artists seem to have some commonality in their sonic palettes that binds it all together in a mutual love for music as a healing force of nature <3

Something has been stirring in Margate for sometime now. The once-dishevelled seaside town has been attracting musicians and creative Londoners for a while, but it’s also home to a “small girl who makes big noises,” aka sharply rising pop artist @babiibabiibabii. Immediately grabbing our attention with debut singles ‘Phantom’ and ‘SEiiZURE‘, BABii was championed early on by Iglooghost, and the lowercase ‘i’-loving artist has already drawn comparisons with Grimes, Purity Ring and FKA Twigs for her oddball, off-kilter soundscapes. Now signed to Deathwaltz Originals, her forthcoming debut LP ‘HiiDE’ has been co-produced by Adrian Sherwood – and BABii has been building up to this, more recently dropping the sugary, ice-cold ‘POiiSON’ (which came with a Catnapp remix). The mix features her own childhood self on the mix, as BABii explains: “ii FOUND AN OLD TAPE FROM WHEN ii WAS A KiiD OF ME AND MY LiiL SiiS RECORDiiNG A PRETEND RADiiO SHOW AND ii THOUGHT iiT WOULD BE CUTE TO USE THEM iiN THE MiiX.” An off-kilter blend of wonky late ’00s rap, Britney-esque pop and featuring tracks from fellow Dummy Mix helmers Howie Lee and PC Music’s umru, you should definitely tune in now.
