The Oxidized compilation series is a charity project we have been working on since the inception of The Rust Music, with Oxidized, Vol. 1 being our very first label release in February 2017. At the end of each year we select a new charity, aid organization, or non-profit, to which all proceeds from the series are donated. In the past we have donated to organizations focusing on natural disaster aid, environmental restoration and preservation, as well as civil/human rights advocates and COVID-19 relief efforts on local, national, and international levels. 2022 proceeds from the Oxidized series will be donated to support women’s rights to healthcare and access to abortion, with this year’s donation to be determined towards the end of 2023.

Across the last 6 years, we've recurrently tapped into a network of both our roster talent and our close associates across the experimental electronic music spectrum to craft our first two Oxidized compilations. Now, for the final entry in the Oxidized Trilogy, we've brought together 32 producers, songwriters, and musicians from the US, the UK, Germany and Georgia to craft 28 tracks that cross through a medley of motifs in Hip-Hop, Drum & Bass, Downtempo, and more. With nearly a decade of tracks marking his discography, the Beatroots sound has evolved alongside the evolving science of sound design and engineering fundamentals, making the project a veritable waypoint for the many congruent paths of electronic music. With that dynamic in mind, The Rust is incredibly excited to host the release of his latest LP, Reset Remedy.

Bridging all gaps between intense and pensive compositions, Reset Remedy is an expansive, meticulous expression of minimalism and instrumental interplay; few moments in any track involve a plethora of tones, utilizing the call and response between select textures and timbres. Where one synthesizer ends, another begins with choice overlap, giving an otherwise minimalist approach a very maximalist impact. Juggling a mixture of eclectic trip-hop, drum and bass, and downtempo rhythms, the album sets itself apart from the pack through its elaborative and evolving songwriting in both steady-beat and broken-beat motifs. Austin native Somatoast returns with his second Gravitas album release, ‘Goop’, available now on all digital outlets. No stranger to the experimental and psychedelic realms of electronic music, Mark Rubin draws on IDM and glitch influences to provide a seven track sonic thrill ride full of visceral soundscapes and alluring melodies. Intricate sound design is his hallmark, and with finesse he effortlessly incorporates his refined palette into both dubby and downtempo frameworks.

‘Goop’ begins with “Nodus Tollens”, a smooth and laid back opener with heavy focus on ominous ambiance. The futuristic concoction “Obscurity Security” comes next, chock full of cosmic textures which perfectly set the tone for the entire album. Wonky and upbeat, “Polytricks” resets the pace before diving into the dreamy title track, a silky creation sure to send you adrift through the galaxy. “Spunning Song” builds on the celestial theme and injects velvety, groovy basslines for a funky and fluid finish. The last original offering on the album, “Robot Rain Drops”, is at times sensual and seductive, but the blissful flow is interrupted with upbeat sections peppered throughout. Wrapping up the release, remixing artist Zonra layers his abstract atmospheric style over the already sturdy foundation provided by Somatoast for his take on “Goop”.

Somatoast - Polytricks

The award winning and Gilles Peterson-approved Danish supergroup Kalaha returns with their first release in almost two years: the EP 'Mama Ngoma'. 

The EP is first and foremost a tribute to West African traditions like Highlife and Afrobeat but mixed with the dance floor appeal of contemporary electronic music. 

The backbone of the band comes from the outrageous drumming of Emil de Waal, who's improvisational attitude is known to astound audiences around the world, alongside the finely balanced guitar of Niclas Knudsen, who has been studying and refining African techniques for more than a decade now. 

On top of this, the two highly regarded electronic producers and synth wizards, Rumpistol & Spejderrobot, take the band to new musical hemispheres by adding layers through extra-terrestrial synths, analogue effects and spaced out samples. 

The electronic aspect of the EP is further expanded with two remixes from NYC-based MALAKAI and Danish rising star Bwoy de Bhajan. 

The EP is accompanied by an animated video directed by the group's art director Zven Balslev, and in the spring of 2019 follows an entire album titled 'Mandala'.

The EP kicks off with the catchy and highly danceable 'Mama Ngoma', which combines African mud huts with epic science fiction. We then reach the hypnotic horn attack of 'Cape Star', featuring wonderful guitar work from Knudsen, before the West Coast inspired 'Malaika' leads into an outro that’s like Talking Heads, if David Byrne was replaced by a Speak&Spell computer! 

Fourth track and first single 'Dragon Jenny' shows the band in more mellow and reflective territories without losing their groove. The track has already received airplay around the world. 

To finish things off we're proud to have the NYC-based producer MALAKAI present his dubsteppy anagram remix of 'Malaika', before rising star Bwoy de Bhajan spoils us with his minimalistic take on 'Cape Star', reminiscent of some of Shackletons earlier percussion-driven work.

MALAKAI is the musical vision of Brooklyn based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Malakai Linden. Drawing on a wide range of influences, his music strives to bridge a gap between electronic and acoustic spaces, incorporating sounds of real-world instruments into an eclectic brand of bass driven electronic beats. Following a pattern of organic growth, MALAKAI’s live sets consist of a carefully curated and immersive journey through a multitude of musical flavors.

MALAKAI began producing in 2011 at the age of 17 under the guidance of acclaimed producer/guitarist Derek VanScoten (Cloudchord, D.V.S*) and went on to earn a degree in Music Technology from New York University. In 2017, he teamed up with Wyler Sanca and Francesco Ferran to form The Rust Music, a record label, blog and production company dedicated to showcasing forward-thinking music and art in NYC. 

Since his start, MALAKAI has shared stages with internationally renowned artists such as Emancipator, Desert Dwellers, Ott, Random Rab, Clozee, and Purity Ring, and appeared at numerous festivals across the northeast including Wild Woods Music (NH), Camp Bisco (PA), and Great North (ME).

Over the past year, MALAKAI has been featured on releases through Desert Trax (Antumbral Shadow - compiled by Desert Dwellers), and The Rust Music (Saros EP, Oxidized Vol. 2). Looking to the future there are a number of new projects on his plate, including several collaborations, singles and more to be released in 2018.

Danish supergroup collides electronic sounds with African and Turkish vibes to explore new musical hemispheres.

What kind of music would emerge if you combined a pair of renowned Danish electronic producers with two of the most exciting jazz musicians around?
This was the question in the minds of the Copenhagen Strøm Festival curators. The answer? It arrived in the form of Scandinavian electro pioneers Rumpistol and Spejderrobot—two prominent characters with a reputation well beyond their home countries—along with guitarist Niclas Knudsen and drummer/percussionist Emil de Waal. These four talented strangers, introduced with minimal rehearsal time, were brought together and launched onstage, and KALAHA was born. A daring experiment to say the least.

From the spontaneous and infectious magic of their first show came their critically acclaimed debut album “Hahaha”, the sound taking its inspiration in equal parts from West-African funk, electro rave and jazz improvisation, standing up as best possible blending of musical worlds—highly energetic and expressive, triggering the listener to dance with the head just as much as the heart.

Their four releases to date have proved to be captivating experiences, epitomized by their distinctive sound design as well as the outstanding instrumental contributions of the protagonists. It comes as no surprise that their albums not only gather constant acclaim in among vinyl connoisseurs, but have also brought KALAHA a Danish Music Award in 2017 as well as a place on the playlists of numerous European radio stations.

"Very tropical again! You can hear that African lo-fi influence on the whole album" 

However many records they put out, though, they were born on stage, and it’s in a live setting that their music rises to another level. In over 100 shows KALAHA have created a state of euphoria among audiences who might never have otherwise thought they could ever dance so hard to music with a jazz influence!
