This excerpt from Carl Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot (1994) was inspired by an image taken by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990. As the spacecraft was departing our planetary neighborhood for the fringes of the solar system, it turned around for one last look at its home planet. 

The image of the "Pale Blue Dot" can be seen as a reminder of how precious this life is, how delicate and ephemeral. Sagan’s lesson in the face of this is, “to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”
