Kalita are honoured to release the first ever compilation focusing on the musical career of Julie Coker, the queen of Nigerian television. Here we collate seven of Julie’s most sought-after Afro disco and hauntingly-beautiful Itsekiri highlife recordings, accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-beforeseen photos.

After gaining fame as Miss Western Nigeria 1957, Julie began her career in the Nigerian entertainment industry as the country’s first ever (and Africa’s second) female television presenter, as well as a popular national radio host.

In 1976, having been surrounded by close musical friends including Fela Kuti and Kris Okotie, Julie entered the Nigerian music scene with the now-invisible psychedelic highlife album ‘Ere Yon (Sweet Songs)’, followed in 1981 by the highly sought-after disco-centric ‘Tomorrow’ to great acclaim. Both now fetch eye-watering prices on the rare occasion that they become available for sale.

Here we select four recordings from ‘Ere Yon (Sweet Songs)’ and three from ‘Tomorrow’, all as contemporary-sounding today as they were when first released forty years ago. These include Julie’s ‘Ere Yon’, which was recently re-interpreted by Anderson Paak on his latest album ‘Oxnard’ released on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath imprint, and the lost Afro disco classic ‘Gossiper Scandal Monger’.

In partnership with Julie, we now believe the time is right to share Julie’s phenomenal story and music with the world once more.

Terrestrial Funk's third release brings us back to our home state of Florida. Traveling time to the year 1979 we find ourselves on the Gulf Coast in a city called Sarasota. Sal Garcia leads Omni, the resident band at the Columbia,  a Spanish restaurant operating in the city since the turn of the century. Sal and his band look to record a single ironically called Disco Sucks but the restaurant isn't willing to fund a record with the word 'sucks' in it, so the band changes the track title to 'Disco Socks'. The song is a disco odyssey with driving drums, ethereal flutes, playful lyrics, and a synth solo for the gods. On the b side there's a little latin number called 'Sarasota (Que Bueno Esta)'. An ode to their city, the song praises Sarasota for its beautiful women and precious beaches. Sal is still living his dream playing at piano bars in the city. He was kind enough to work with us on this release and we're grateful to share more Florida music with the world.

Michael The Lion and Amy Douglas, hot off the success of the anthemic "Get It On" re-join forces for an EP that’s a road trip through American funk and soul music.

Lead single “Find A Way,” already conquering dance floors since its release in November, features Moon Boots collaborator Steven Klavier, whose lilting tones marry flawlessly with Amy's power on a maximalist disco cut, which garnered a 9/10 rating in Mixmag.

"James Is The Message” is a fat slab of NOLA fonk that tells the story of one hell of an evening in Bywater. “Social Love Song” is a gospel shuffle to remind all of the importance of self love and then loving your fellow man. " Drink You Up" is a naughty piece of disco celebrating the freedom of a purely 'no strings' policy. A cover of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson’s “Willing,” serves as the perfect denouement.

With a live band alongside Amy's piano duties and multi-instrumentalist Michael, this EP is a choice and heartfelt slice of life and disco purism.

Soul Clap Records coming now with the full EP release on 13th March as a digital offering, alongside some seriously heavy remixes by the mighty John Morales. The Remixes are on 12" vinyl, with a digital offering 3rd April plus a Digital Bonus track!
