Adagio for Margo

In this example, a progression of unforgiving sustained octave-doubled sawtooth chords (Csound) is played against a drum track (Native Instruments' Battery 3). The whole thing is played three times with the following variations:

1. the frequencies are tuned to the conventional equal temperament. The swirling complex beating pattern of harmonics never repeats. 

2. the equal tempered frequencies are rounded to the nearest integer number of Hz. The frequencies become harmonics of a 1 Hz fundamental and this results in a repeating beating pattern of 1 second (maximum length). 

3. this time the frequencies are harmonics of a 2 Hz fundamental and the length of the beating pattern is .5 seconds. 

Any set of steady tones can be tuned to a repeating period, for example detuned oscillators, equal tempered and microtuned pitches. The formula for quantizing the frequencies is simple to implement in a soft synth: 

frequency_new=round(period*frequency_old)/period

The accuracy of the tuning varies with the length of the period. With short periods some intervals might sound out of tune, particularly in the bass registers. Detuned oscillators might also become quantized to the same frequency if the detuning is not wide enough.  

Tempo Synced Beating

Zzibid was a collaboration between myself and an at-the-time friend who was a goth rocker and fellow synth enthusiast. The project was an attempt to fuse both of our genres but without really taking it too seriously, and as such we co-wrote the material, though I programmed and produced it.

Sadly, Zzibid was short lived, we created three tracks, or "jam sessions" including a pretty cool synth/vocal track before the band was broken up by a third party.

I should also take full responsibility for the cheesy organ solos in the middle :)

This is a slightly new direction for me, I am using python to generate fractals in MIDI and importing them into Ableton to add the sounds. This is using Ableton's Operator synth and basic sounds. This is for the Disquiet open mic. Feedback is welcome, I am especially interested in pointers on how to improve my synth sounds.
