We begin our study of Capital, vol. 1 by discussing what it means to read, study, and apply the book as comrades in the struggle for socialism in the U.S. today. We situate our reading within the struggle to not only popularize and give definition to socialism, but to establish Marxism as the guiding theory of struggles. Next, we cover some of the history and context of the book and finally examine the Prefaces and Afterwards by Marx and Engels, we introduce the form, content, methodology, and context of Capital, vol. 1, paying particular attention to Marx’s method of abstraction.

#1: REVOLUTIONARY READING (Prefaces & Afterwards)

Our invitation to perform at the Free Burn in 2021 was met with joyful anticipation, a bit of nerves, and gratitude - this would be our first time in the Black Rock Desert for the Free Burn. 

We played during sunset on the day that the Robot Heart Community celebrated Geo, and still remember the palpable love and human connection as everyone danced and honored him and his contribution to this magical place.  

The energy that was built from the time we set up all of our music gear, through the performance, to the very end, was out of this world. Playing live and completely improvised, our music was a direct reflection of the synthesis of human love and energy that intersected there, on the open desert plain in the glow of the setting sun.  

Thank you to the Robot Heart Community, Swamy, Gunita, Navid, and the countless friends and special souls who came together to make this one of the most memorable experiences - for all of us.

Catherine Kapphahn (“The Boy Who Flew” Queensboro Plaza – N) is a writer, educator, storyteller and speaker. Her memoir Immigrant Daughter: Stories You Never Told Me received The Center for Fiction’s Christopher Doheny Award, and Catherine recorded it for Audible. Catherine received grants from the Queens Council on the Arts and City Artist Corps. Her writing has appeared in Motherwell Magazine, Croatia Week, Newtown Literary, the Feminist Press Anthology This is the Way We Say Goodbye, Astoria Life, and CURE Magazine. Catherine is an adjunct lecturer at City University of New York at Lehman College in the Bronx, where her students’ brave stories inspire her. Catherine also is a yoga teacher. She grew up near the mountains in Colorado and now lives between two bridges in Queens with her husband and two sons.
