The highly anticipated follow up to his 2015 debut EP 'Arc', Kamera returns to continue his journey on Phantasy with four diverse new tracks that serve to expand his visionary take on modern electronica. 
Conceived during a series of gruelling training sessions while cycling Mont Ventoux, the internationally infamous French mountain otherwise known as ‘The Beast of Provence’, Ventoux captures Kamera’s vision in it’s most intriguing and singular form so far.

'MFI5' is a masterfully frenzied passage of dancefloor darkness. Helpless acid modulations and chaotic samples are ceaselessly manipulated around two powerful breakdowns; one offering some respite, eventually concluding with another that sees the track collapse under the weight of it’s own power.

Melding both the cerebral and the physical with ease, Kamera only continues to perfect an unpredictable sound that’s both refreshingly futurist and yet completely timeless.

London producer Jody Barr readies the second release on his fledgling imprint Portable Minds after a successful inauguration that garnered support from Eats Everything, Laurent Garnier and Skream. In for 002 is an uncompromising 3-track EP including 2 tracks from the label owner himself and a stellar remix from Phantasy affiliate Kamera.

The ‘Turbo Jangle’ EP is cold and heavy paring that melds his seismic kicks with rasping analogue synths. Galvanised drums and carefully managed reverb see Barr’s sights set to big-room spaces whilst a subtle suffusion of dub maintains a sense of class. Next up, Kamera - an artist recently collared by Erol Alkan’s label and one who matches the ethos of Portable Minds perfectly - provides his take on the title track.

Hissing textures and tearing hi hats sit atop bit-crushed melodies and menacing sweeps in a revision that manages to maintain a sense of fervid tension without ever quite boiling over. Together all three sit as a serious coup for a label in such early development and provide an exciting insight into what’s in store from Portable Minds.

Since 2015, James Welsh’s contribution to Phantasy as Kamera has delivered a series of releases shrouded in mystery, injected with the personal energy of both a hardcore and club heritage. Two EPs, ‘Arc’ and ‘Ventoux’, set a distinct tone, with the latter complimented by head-turning remixes from artists such as George Fitzgerald, Throwing Snow, Truncate and Yaleesa Hall. Now, the key Phantasy artist emerges from the shadows under his own name, in order to continue his uncompromising musical journey.

‘Slip’ is an initially unexpectedly spectral diversion, transmitting a curious synth line into space, and receiving a choral, sombre frequency in return. Without losing it’s emotive qualities, the track succumbs to a hailstorm of Welsh’s sharp, potent drums, before collapsing in understated catharsis.

He began to walk upon the tightrope which was suspended delicately between the two skyscrapers. Down on the ground below the people looked like tiny ants, a small world far, far away. His balancing act was intricate and neat. It was a case of precision, to thread the needle was no easy feat, a performance which was a lifetimes work. 

James Welsh is perhaps better known under his former alias as Kamera. The producer has formed a close relationship with the Phantasy record label run by Erolk Alkan. He returns with a new two track EP which is set for release on the 21st of July later this month.

Fresh off the underground success of ‘Standing/Slip’, a club-ready bullet that received support from DJs such as Scuba, Adam Beyer and Leftfield, James Welsh returns to Phantasy post haste, once again blending a slab of characteristic rave euphoria with a more downtempo trip on the flip.
 
The release opens on ‘Thread’, the unmistakeable sound of Welsh pushing his studio to its unworldly limits. Initially building the tension with competing, spectral components, an ominous intro paves the way for the sudden eruption of a stomping, hi-NRG electro bassline. Pathologically chaotic until it’s final moments, sudden breakdowns of white noise and ghostly commands lost deep in the mix anchor the listener in reality, enveloped in smoke and strobes, real or imagined.
 
On the contrary, ‘North’ (premiering above) stretches a skeletal half-step beat to support a bracing vision of maximalist melancholy. A chilly analogue hymn, awash in choral reverb, heavenly organ sounds coalesce with cathartic distortion, creating a six-minute musical landscape that is at once pleasingly epic, yet tellingly intimate in its more subtle details. 
 
Physical and cerebral in equal measure, ‘Thread/North’ is a worthy contribution to Welsh’s increasingly powerful back catalogue.
