 23-yr-old Kam Knewton is opting to spread a more encouraging message amidst the hardcore world of rap music. Hailing from The Bronx, Kam wrote his first rap at eight years old after hearing 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Trying.  As he continued to write raps and started poetry (which he later found was “too easy”), Kam fell in love with the former and began pursuing a career in music at 14 years old. 
Kam has received his fair share of inspiration from hip hop, citing 50 Cent, Notorious BIG, Bob Marley and Lil Wayne as major influences. He refers to fellow Latino rapper Big Pun as his major influence, mostly due to their shared heritage. To Kam, Pun was the proof that “rap is rap. It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you’re from. If you’re good, the people will know.” 
But he looks to various artists and genres to match his worldy, full-circle style. Kam describes his style as “soothing conscious rap.” With the release of his first mixtape Gandhi’s Garden in April 2014, he references the sounds of Erykah Badu, Ab Soul, Jhene Aiko and Common as guidance for this project. Emphasizing the desire not to create an aggressive body of work incompatible to his emotions while recording, his goals for his influence certainly shine through. “I want to spread positive energy [with my work].  I feel like more positive chill vibes are needed in rap because aggression isn’t always relatable. The music I listen to has a power over me. So I want to inspire people to spread positive energy because they hear my music.”
Kam is known as the peaceful relaxed entity of his friends, gaining the nickname “Gandhi". His words both on and off tracks has proven to inspire and improve those around him. Kam’s leadership skills definitely shine through the rap collective - and “my biggest supporters beside my dad,” as Kam would say - Flow City Comprised of four New York-based rappers, FC features a variety of styles and flows similar to “a young Wu Tang” as Kam states. While Kam is the de facto shepherd of this musical flock, he doesn’t hesitate to express how the group equally motivates him. FC is not just a group but family first and are fans of one another’s music. But friendship doesn’t stop them from holding punches, being brutally honest with their critiques to guide each other to be better artists. 
But what set FC – namely Kam – apart from many other hip hop artists apart are their spiritual desires over their materialistic ones. While his eyes are definitely on the typical music target, Kam Knewton doesn’t want to be remembered for material possession. He doesn’t seek money, fame or a record deal as validation of his impact as “it’ll come on its own.” He just want to be remembered as the Gandhi of this generation, affecting the world in a positive way and seeing everyone prosper one way or another. With beginnings such as Gandhi’s Garden, there’s much more blooming and soaring in the imminent career of the young Kam Knewton.
