"Impeach the President" is a single by funk band the Honey Drippers, written and produced by Roy Charles Hammond, known as Roy C. It was first released on Alaga Records in 1973, and was re-released to iTunes by Tuff City Records in 2017, after being sampled hundreds of times since the mid-1980s. It is a protest song advocating the impeachment of then-President of the United States Richard Nixon. In the chorus, the band chants the song's title while Roy persuades them to stop. The B-side is "Roy C's Theme".

The song is famous for having its drum pattern being one of the most adapted beats in hip hop, R&B, jazz and even pop music. The hi-hat is lifted on the sixth note of the drum pattern, similar to "Hihache" by the Lafayette Afro Rock Band which does so on the 8th (which is hidden in several R&B songs) and this means that some songs which sample "Impeach" also interpolate "Hihache", e.g. Ronny Jordan's "Come with Me".

Having taken on Greg Wilson’s vision of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' with aplomb, Kermit Leveridge decided to bring his own track into play for the follow-up release. Growing up in a Caribbean household, ska was a staple for Kermit, and Derrick Morgan’s easy skanking 'Seven Letters' was a record that particularly resonated.

Originally a soul track written and recorded by Ben E. King, 'Seven Letters' follows a series of love notes sent to his girl over a week, but with a response lacking, he ends up losing faith in the relationship and decides to go back home. The theme of ‘going back home’ had a particular significance in Kermit’s household growing up, with his parents often talking about ‘going back home’ to Jamaica.

Taking him back to childhood; mentally, emotionally and spiritually, 'Seven Letters' is one of those songs that’s been a constant in Kermit’s life, always looming in the back of his mind and re-emerging at times of relevance. Kermit had played with the idea of making a version of the track with Blind Arcade but it was put on ice as EVM128 was too busy with his studies to work on anything at the time.

On the back of some brilliant work he’d done with Greg Wilson, Kermit discussed the idea with Peza and was astounded when he received a robust demo of the backing track the very next day. Although Peza had taken the track in a slightly different direction than Kermit had previously intended, the new version had it’s own distinctive vibe and Kermit quickly set about finding the right lyrics to fit.

In this contemporary interpretation, Kermit’s decided enough is enough and he’s heading back home; his bags are packed, his boots laced up and he’s going down that long dusty road - this is the last time you’ll see him round here.

Having lent their vocal prowess to the first seven Super Weird Substance releases, the sublime singing capacity of The Reynolds and Tracey Carmen was a must on the eighth. Counterbalancing the staunch swagger of Peza’s dubwise programming, the trio’s mellow yet flavoursome backing vocals tie everything together.

EVM128 contributed with some ruff up sounds, helping with the track’s raw edge, most effective in Greg & Peza’s alternative ‘version’. Gareth ‘Misterlong’ Bailey adds to the melancholy via his mournful trombone, inspired by Rico from The Specials, who sadly died recently aged 80.

Washington, DC's  Sol Power All-Stars have long been local favorites as a result of their melange of global soulful grooves. After gaining some acclaim with two cheeky edit EPs on GAMM and BSTRD Boots (Bastard Jazz's edit-leaning offshoot) some years back, the All-Stars decided to start their own label. Thus, Sol Power Sound was born, carrying over the african and latin influences of the group into a neat platform for both sample-based and originally produced house music. The label kicked things off with the super nifty Plaza Bolivar EP from the All-Stars themselves, before releasing two mighty EPs from Tom from Brookyln and Obas Nenor. Last year's self-produced Djidjo Vide 12" was, however, the last we'd seen from the imprint in a minute. Thankfully, here to break the hiatus and slot in as the imprint's fifth release is Aroop Roy's Rising Tides.

Occupying the A-Side is our premiere, the vocal mix of "Tembandumba". The cut is of course a re-imagination of Afro-Colombian vocalist Totó la Momposina's chant-laden classic, and a fully-licensed one at that! It opens in dramatic fashion, with vocals and flourishing percussion setting the table. Once the beat comes in, Aroop's knack for the rework becomes truly apparent. Perfectly tuned drums make the tune ride along, while a variety of layered synths blend nicely with the vocal chops of the original. "Tembandumba" is an eight minute long epic that employs a beautiful escalation of mood, perhaps functioning nicely as an opener of sorts due to the aforementioned introduction section of the track.

The label is back just in time for summer with three more doses of peak time fire from Aroop Roy, who has gained a fine reputation for the quality and widespread appeal of his releases.

‘You Say' is a funk-fuelled number with gritty retro vocals and guitar, driven by a warm disco groove and 80s arp-synth. The feel-good vibes gradually build into an anthemic floor-filling climax.

‘Taj Mahal' reworks a Brazilian classic into a full on house workout, reminiscent of Roy's popular series on Gamm.

‘Mapora' is an original number that will blend well into both deep house and afro-centric sets. The track builds nicely with filtered samples and syncopated vocals, coming in with an infectious highlife guitar line and late night synth stabs, to get mind and body moving.

Pierre-Claver Akendengué (born April 25, 1943) is a musician and composer from Gabon. In 1997, he received his country's "Prix d'excellence" at the Africa Music awards in Libreville, honoring his body of work. He also serves as a cultural advisor for the government of Gabon.

Born on the island of Awuta, which is located just off the coast from Port-Gentil, Akendengué went to school in Port-Gentil, then studied psychology at the University of Caen in France during the 1960s. While in France, he met singer Mireille, who encouraged his musical interests.

In 1974, Akendengué recorded his first album, Nandipo, which consisted of songs of his own composition, sung in French and Nkomi, accompanied by guitar, women choir, bass and the percussion of Nana Vasconcelos. He later set to music poems by P. E. Mondjegou, such as "Le Chant du Coupeur d'Okoumé" ("The Song of the Okoumé Cutter"). Returning to Gabon, he studied solfeggio and plainchant at a Catholic college, and presented spectacles showcasing traditional Gabonese forms in a concert setting.

In 1986, he received a doctorate from the University of Paris for his study of religion and education among the Nkomi.

Eddy Grant, born in Guyana, emigrated very soon with his parents to London. He had his first UK #1 hit “Baby Come Back” in 1968, with The Equals. 
As happened with many other reggae artists his exquisite talent was globally overshadowed by the mighty Bob Marley. Yet Grant did not produced strictly reggae music but he occasionally broke the barriers recording from garage punk and good old rock’n’roll to soulful funk, electronic disco and dance pop.

He released his first solo record in 1975 writing usually stuff about social and political issues and from his 1980 (fourth) LP “Love In Exile” comes “Nobody’s Got Time”, a massive NY underground club classic. Although it was not a single, this album track got picked up by the most influential NY DJs. It was being played in all the right venues from Loft to Paradise Garage and was adored by cosmic DJ crowds. Its gripping atmosphere benefits from the irresistibly catchy hook and the edgy reggae-funk groove which is based on some extraordinary keyboards and electro sounds.. 

On this edit, which is made with Tony Johns -our third collaboration-, everything is reformed.. Enjoy :)
