This week's second mix comes courtesy of Kandylion, our next Xoxa mix filled with energetic house and acid grooves. 

“I took this mix as an opportunity to explore some faster, harder sounds than I usually play out, and included some gems that I’ve been sitting on for a while! I’m very pleased to share this and really enjoyed digging into this side of my library. I think it still feels very “Kandylion” and includes some of my favorite Brooklyn artists. Also, if you’ve seen me in the past few months you’ve probably heard me wax eloquent about the impact that this year’s Honcho Campout left on me, so for this mix I mentally drew inspiration from the sounds I got to hear late-night at the Grove and imagining what I might play in that environment (hence the mix name.) Kandylion (pronouns: she/any) has spent the better part of the last decade honing her dj chops in the Brooklyn underground dance scene, and is a current resident of queer nightlife collective XOXA. Her versatile and dynamic mixes playfully span genres with an emphasis on house, disco, acid and breaks, with melody and groove at the forefront.

About the Mix: «safe house (noun): a place where one may engage in secret activities or take refuge. 
The selections in this mix include original classics from the 90s and beyond alongside thoughtful reworks and new music from artists that I feel continue to vanguard the house music ethos of unity, respect, and freedom of expression, through the lens of my own personal experiences in the New York queer club scene. I recorded this mix in one continuous take with lots of extended blends that move through the vocal, deep, acid, soulful and electro subgenres. I also wanted this mix to feel like an unapologetically queer dance floor experience because both the history of the genre and my own relationship to dance music are inextricably intertwined with the LGBTQ community and with the idea of the club as a refuge. *House is a sanctuary!*»

House of Others #015 | KANDYLION | Safe House

Kandylion has a sound that is deeply rooted in the years she has spent in the NYC queer scene. Infusing house groves with elements of disco, soul, rnb, acid and breaks, she seeks to provide an uplifting and irresistible dance floor experience that is accessible to all.

JC (SPRFRK) Brooklyn, NY via Miami, FL, A dance floor diva-turned-DJ with a strong presence in the Brooklyn underground queer scene. He’s held a residency at Happyfun Hideaway with his formerly know “Sick’ning Fridays” happy hour since 2020. Playing parties like Harder, Scandalo NYC, Queer Disorganization, Bottle Service, Sole Rehab and he recently opened for Hercules & Love Affair. He hopes to continue collaborating and growing with DJs and artists from all over and bring his extra spicy and freaky flavor with his diverse and eclectic sound to many more dance floors in NYC and around the world.

"It was a really fun process putting this together with JC and finding a cohesive sound between our two musical tastes, which are very similar! I love the extra gay moments we came up with. I also love how the structure of this mix mimics what I consider to be an ideal dance floor experience: a warmup with lots of percussive groove; a slow build in energy with lots of soul and classic house styles that locks you in through to the peak; and a lush melodic wind down that ends on an optimistic note :)

If you know JC/SPRFRK, then you know he is a person who brings a special energy to a room (and to the decks!) Over the time I’ve known him, I’ve watched him grow and refine his sound as a dj and I love the chemistry that we’ve developed playing together, so I knew he was absolutely the right choice for this b2b.
