This was the winning entry in the 6th Chop Shop at 343 Labs in New York. 343 Labs is a music production school with its flagship location in New York City. Each month, community members are invited to remix a selected piece. This month's track was "Zombie" by Great Dane.

A record with a name like ‘Geminus’ was bound to have a twin. The initial release of the record was the #4 most played record on non-commercial radio in the “World” category. The remixes of the original Geminus record, recorded in Brooklyn in 2020 and released in 2021, are unique for a few reasons. Firstly, Kane is both the remix artist as well as the composer and lead artist on the original studio recording. Secondly, the goal of this album is not to prolong the hype around the initial release but rather as an experiment in situating the pieces in different sonic contexts. At the heart of this experiment is a long-standing approach Kane used in composing the original pieces. This approach is the simple idea that the piece should hold up to being performed with any instrumentation you have available if the melody could be played by at least one of the instruments.

In 2023 after an album fundraiser did not generate enough resources to record a new album with a live band Kane opened the sessions from his last studio session and began reworking the compositions into new forms. Kane’s background in production and engineering are skills he typically uses in support of other artists in the field of music, theater, and dance and this album represents the first time he is applying those skills to the reworking of his own pieces.

Kane began experimental music production at the beginning of his 20-year career as a staff accompanist for dance at two major universities. In collaboration with other artists, he created works ranging from beat music to experimental sound design. This experience in conversation with his equally enduring pursuit of traditional musical forms and conservatory training has led to a unique approach to music production.

The Geminus remixes rework the original studio recordings featuring John Hadfield on drums, Sam Minaie on Bass, and Kane Mathis on Oud and Kora performing Kane’s original pieces. The remixes feature the original recordings heavily in quality and form and make particular use of John and Sam’s excellent playing. The original recordings were performed live in the studio in a few takes and the hope was that some of that immediacy would be retained in the remixes.
