For Jesse Somfay music has always been about communicating and sharing immense feelings which he finds impossible to convey in any other way. His Borealis alias was born as a twinned satellite to his work under his birth name. Much like conjoined twins, the two share the same heart and breathe with the same lungs, and even though they speak of similar things, they do it from two different vantage points. According to Jesse, it is better for something to be felt in whole than to be defined and reflected upon in approximation, and this album - his sixth to date and second under the Borealis handle - is a truly wholesome, boundless, gorgeous emotional experience on both the end of its creator and its listener. 

Glittervoice is Somfay's most energetically intense work to date. It is both euphoric and dysphoric and the music itself cannot be pigeonholed into any particular genre - hints of techno, oldschool trance or rave complement each other just to ultimately get lost in an artfully crafted trademark sound. It’s easy to allow this multifaceted, hyperlayered, continuously shapeshifting aural multiverse to deprive you of any form of reason, activate all senses and carry you where no music has before, regardless of where you listen to it. Glittervoice’s 16 tracks encompass everything from visceral warehouse techno to stylish ambient compositions via rapid hypnotic drum loops and trance synths of cosmic proportions, all filtered through his unique etherial aesthetic. 

Having something equally introspective and weighty yet exceptionally club-friendly is a rare feat that could soundtrack any modern techno mecca - be it a big dark room or an open air festival. 
The emergence of Borealis meant an unexpected turn for Somfay, but at the end of the day, much like its worthy genre-defying predecessor, Glittervoice is yet another album not of this reality - a sonic guide to entering “the flow”.

On October 19, 2025, the Los Angeles Synth Club celebrated one year of monthly group shows at the Old Towne Pub in Pasadena. We had seven members playing 30 minute sets live on hardware, as is our wont. My third track was made with samples from cheesy spooky soundtracks meant for haunted houses, but I believe naming it after Kiyoshi Kurosawa's PULSE classes it up a lot.

Era demasiado amor. Demasiado grande, demasiado complicado, demasiado confuso, y arriesgado, y fecundo, y doloroso. Tanto como yo podía dar, más del que me convenía. Por eso se rompió. No se agotó, no se acabó, no se murió, sólo se rompió, se vino abajo como una torre demasiado alta, como una apuesta demasiado alta, como una esperanza demasiado alta.

En la playa, todo acabó empezando, todo empezó a acabarse, pero yo todavía no me di cuenta.
Había sido demasiado amor, tanto como el que yo podía dar, más del que me convenía. Fue demasiado amor. Y luego, nada.

Quizá la mayor facultad que posee nuestra mente sea la capacidad de sobrellevar el dolor. El pensamiento clásico nos enseña las cuatro puertas de la mente, por las que cada uno pasa según sus necesidades.

La primera es la puerta del sueño. El sueño nos ofrece un refugio del mundo y de todo su dolor. El sueño marca el paso del tiempo y nos proporciona distancia de las cosas que nos han hecho daño. Cuando una persona resulta herida, suele perder el conocimiento. Y cuando alguien recibe una noticia traumática, suele desvanecerse o desmayarse. Así es como la mente se protege del dolor: pasando la primera puerta.

La segunda es la puerta del olvido. Algunas heridas son demasiado profundas para curarse, o para curarse deprisa. Además, muchos recuerdos son dolorosos, y no hay curación posible. El dicho de que "el tiempo todo lo cura" es falso. El tiempo cura la mayoría de las heridas. El resto están escondidas detrás de esa puerta.

La tercera es la puerta de la locura. A veces, la mente recibe un golpe tan brutal que se esconde en la demencia. Puede parecer que eso no sea beneficioso, pero lo es. A veces, la realidad es sólo dolor, y para huir de ese dolor, la mente tiene que abandonar la realidad.

La última puerta es la de la muerte. El último recurso. Después de morir, nada puede hacernos daño, o eso nos han enseñado.
