In times of unprecedented change in society, art can be an important, if not vital, tool to express our observations.
Devised and constructed during the Covid-19 outbreak, 'Until the dust settles' is a response to the strange juxtaposition of timelessness and emotional intensity that comes with social distancing and ‘lockdown’. As we desperately seek to find new ways to share music, the premise for this work was to cultivate something entirely new from within our current context. The singers of Kantos have each recorded a single pitch of their choice in their own homes. Then the recordings have been ordered, stitched together and manipulated by Ellie Slorach, Musical Director of Kantos, to create a tapestry of sound. The piece is intended to encourage reflection on the severity of the outbreak but also signal hope for the listener.

Until the dust settles

Kantos is a dynamic chamber choir based in Manchester. As well as performing innovative and original concerts of their own, the choir regularly perform and record with ensembles including the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Kantos regularly broadcast for the BBC Radio 4 Daily Service and Sunday Worship programmes.
