Intention of this podcast was to link the Ohlone community's local history to the present-day work the community & leaders are doing to defend their sacred land and to preserve their culture.

California indigenous nations have thousands of years of knowledge that has survived multiple waves of colonization and attempted destruction. Kanyon Coyote Woman Sayers-Roods, an Ohlone Mutsun two-spirited community member from the California Central Coast, tells about the Ohlone people’s culture and their history of resistance and resilience.

This episode was produced and edited by Dennis Maxwell for the Redwood City School District. The music was composed by Axel Herrera. The art cover was made by Claudio Talavera Ballon. November is Native American Heritage Month, and we're excited to add more Native voices in our museum with a new documentary. Kanyon Sayers-Roods, the co-founder of Kanyon Konsulting LLC and Chairwoman of Indian Canyon Nation, is another Native voice featured in the new short documentary "It Needs to Be Told: Native California Perspectives on the Missions" that will be added to the Santa Cruz Mission viewing room. We're grateful for the whole team that collaborated on this project, and look forward to celebrating its debut on the evening of Sunday November 12th on the mission patio. The community is invited to join us on the 12th for refreshments, talks from participants, a screening, and a Q&A.

The song came to me differently than it was taught.  I learned a Chumash godmother song from a mentor that I can only sing with them and this song came to me differently and is meant to be shared secularly. I identify as a Mutsun-Ohlone and Chumash California Native woman. Offering my song to you.

Introduction Bio:
Kanyon Sayers-Roods is Costanoan Ohlone-Mutsun and Chumash; she also goes by her given Native name, “Coyote Woman”. She is proud of her heritage and her native name (though it comes with its own back story), and is very active in the Native Community. She is an Artist, Poet, Published Author, Activist, Student and Teacher. The daughter of Ann-Marie Sayers, she was raised in Indian Canyon, trust land of her family, which currently is one of the few spaces in Central California available for the Indigenous community for ceremony. Kanyon’s art has been featured at the De Young Museum, The Somarts Gallery, Gathering Tribes, Snag Magazine, and numerous Powwows and Indigenous Gatherings. She is a recent graduate of the Art Institute of California, Sunnyvale, obtaining her Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in Web Design and Interactive Media. She is motivated to learn, teach, start conversations around decolonization and reinidgenization, permaculture and to continue doing what she loves, Art.
